Alright, I'm pretty sure it's fixed. Here is what I did (Thanks goes to Demiurg in a previous post):
I uninstalled everything SS2 related.
Then I re-installed the game fully.
I then installed the patch.
Switched compatibility mode off.
Simple as that, it seems to be working so far, granted I haven't played much of the game, but its running. I'm not quite sure what I did to make everything go horribly wrong the first time. Maybe the second time's the charm.
The main differences were that I didn't add the safe_texture_manager line to any files. I also didn't use the no-cd crack. Who knows? It's kind of weird that it just started up that easily. I may have some other problems later on, but I'm good to go for now! :)

Obviously then, you need to read more carefully. ;)
Strange, I didn't notice those two paragraphs before. :o
Anyways, compability mode is the one thing you should never try when you are trying to fix SS2, since in most cases it does the opposite. :eww:

Its finally working, but I cant load my newest save game, and the old ones work. Movies play and everything else is all good...
After the save game loads you see in-game for about 0.5 of a second, then it returns to the main menu.
THE OLD SAVE GAMES WORK!!

Okay, this is completely bizarre. Does anyone know why it would work long enough for me to get all the way to Engineering, through two days of playing, then suddenly the program won't even start? My computer has not changed at ALL since then. It makes no sense.
I've reinstalled twice, and every time I get this same error. "System Shock 2 has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." It won't even try to start anymore. I just don't get why it would work and let me play all this time, then suddenly not work at all even on a fresh install after I deleted the entire folder.

That's definitely bizarre . . . is this happening in the other Dark engine games as well?

I haven't played them in a while, actually... I was on a new games streak/writing kick for a while. There was Oblivion, Prey, Call of Cthulhu, and a whole lot of Vampire: the Masquerade--Bloodlines, among other things. But mostly VtMB... probably about 14 play-throughs.
I just installed new drivers for my video card, but it still hasn't fixed the problem. I tried adding the safe texture manager line, but it hasn't either. I'd hate to think I'm missing something stupid and obvious, but if it's been working the last two days... I just don't get it.

All right, where was I? Firstly, try running Thief 2, and see if you get a similar crash. If you do, it's probably nothing to do with SS2, but a hardware or Windows problem.
My hunch is that this is either a copyright protection problem or something video card related; if you can be a naughty girl and find the no-CD crack, that might rule out the former as the problem.
Have you been playing any movies in Windows Media Player recently? That could also cause a crash, but normally only when a video is loaded, so I don't think it's that.

This can't happen without any reason, your computer may have changed a little "behind your back".
But you should just try a no CD patch like TNT said, this could very well be related to the copy protection giving your computer a hard time.

Hey there, I've read most of the thread, but didn't see this problem yet!
I have SS2 v2.3 running fine and dandy under WinXP. The only problem is that it keeps turning my computer off without warning. I'll just be in the middle of playing the game and *blip!* no error messages or blue screens, the computer just shuts down instantly. Since I installed the game yesterday this has happened 4 times, mostly after about an hour, but last time it was only running for about 10 minutes. (And yes, it only happens when SS2 is running!) Any ideas?

If you have onboard audio accelerator, try lowering hardware acceleration in dxdiag.
