Well, I had to move the unwrapped EXE to a location with no spaces in order to get it to work. Strange huh?

yeah that is strange, cause it just looks for ./filename.exe
dunno what's up with that, cause i run it from d:\games\irrational games\system shock 2

Well, maybe my WinXP was screwed up, but I have got a new PC since that happened so that weird issue may very well be gone. :)

Hello everyone,
I haven't played System Shock 2 in years and decided to give it a go yesterday, only to discover that it's not Windows XP compatible. I've tried all the options that apply in the FAQ to this original thread (version compatibility, hyper-threading, CD install, hardware acceleration, etc.) and I have no luck getting the game to run.
Basically, I can install and patch System Shock 2 just fine, and I can get the game to boot up and even watch the intro movie, however once that's done and the Von Braun loading screen finishes, the game will cut to black with the Windows "blip" sound instead of going into the game.
My specs are as follows: Intel Pentium D 930 3.00 Ghz, ASUS P5LD2 Motherboard, 1 GB DDR2 Ram, XFX GeForce 7600 GT XXX Edition, Creative Labs SoundBlaster Live! 5.1, Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2.
Does anyone have any further suggestions or tricks?
Thanks!

That is pretty odd. :erm:
Did you disable compability mode after trying it? I strongly suggest not using it, most of the time it only makes things worse.

Hello Bjossi,
Yes, I actually tried with and without compatibility mode, and I always have the same results regardless.

Thank you David, that worked perfectly thus far. Ah, the memories!

Installed SS2 from CD with no problem (no lgntforce required). did multiplayer update, installed Rebirth and SHTUP (newest). Unwrapped EXE and applied no-cd patch (because ths PC has no CD drive, installed off networked drive and can't safedisk onto that drive, hence, had to crack it).
Run the successfully unwrapped and patched exe. Intro.avi plays, menu music starts and then "This program has cause an error and must be closed" etc.
Can not get it working at all, anyone?
If we get a solution for this, I'll update the OP with it, and all the other ones that need to be added.

Maybe this is related to the audio accelerator you have, you can try things like lowering hardware acceleration if you don't have a seperate APU.
