Don't use compability, that makes things worse.
The Dark engine which SS2 uses doesn't like HT nor dualcore as you can read in the first post of this thread, so you have disable CPU1 for shock2.exe from the Task Manager.
But I assume you want to make a permament change. So find and download the imagecfg.exe file, just use google. You are supposed to put the imagecfg.exe file into windows\system32 and windows\system32\dllcache. After that, open up the command-line and type the following.
imagecfg -a 0x1 "C:\games\sshock2\shock2.exe"
That is assuming you installed the game in that location. Doing all this will make the CPU1 disabled permamently for the SS2 executable, removing the freezing problem.
You can also download a fixed EXE from the first post, but I prefer the imagecfg command.

d:\games\sshock2\shock2.exe contains the following configuration information:
Process Affinity Mask: 00000001
d:\games\sshock2\shock2.exe contains a Subsystem Version of 4.0
d:\games\sshock2\shock2.exe updated with the following configuration information:
Process Affinity Mask: 00000001
so, let's try it...

Look for the retexture project, it is called SHTUP beta 5 if I remember correctly.
There is also the rebirth model pack, but many people prefer the original look of the models.
There ain't much more, and of course check out Arcaniac's mod, somewhere in this thread list page. :)

First, SS2 ran perfectly on my XP system (Athlon 2.4+, 512meg, GeForce4, Audigy2). Then my SS2 CD got damaged so I searched, in vain, for a noCD patch. (Actually found several but none worked for me.) So I zipped the SS2 install while searching, in vain, for another CD.
Reinstalled XP over a year ago and, earlier this year, "upgraded" to SP2 (big mistake). I recently found several newer noCD patches, also the V2.03 patch, for SS2 so tried again - with no luck.
I laboriously polished my original CD to where I could copy the necessary files to create a new CD then reinstalled SS2. But it now will not run at all, as soon as I click the icon, or double-click the exe, I get that wretched XP message "...has encountered a problem and needs to close...". Tried reinstalling with the -lgntforce switch ... same results. Tried installing the V2.03 patch and it tells me it was made for use with V1.15 and I have V1.12 (actually right-click>properties tells me it is V1.0.0, though the install adds a patch from a CD directory; original exe is about 280k, one from the patch directory is about 2.8meg). Have tried running in each compatibility mode with the same results.
Have tried the unsafedisc program, which says it was successful, but the game either gives me the same XP message or asks for the CD immediately. Tried unsafedisc then the noCD patches with those same results.
So, is there an intermediate patch to take my version to V1.15 so I can run the V2.03 patch? Would this get SS2 running again under XP? Is there some other solution I could try - other than dredging up an old system just to run SS2?

Right-click on SHOCK2.EXE -> Properties -> Product Version and in right Value-text box there should be magical numbers of 1.15 or 2.3.
If I my memory serves me right, you have the pirate version (1.12) of System Shock 2 and there is no way to update it to 1.15 version.

OK so i've read almost the entire thread, and it seems that im the first person to have this problem.......:erg: so........i can run the game fine, no saving problems or that problem where the game freezes after you choose ur job (marine, etc.) sure, the cutscenes dont cue up, but i can just watch them with wmp or whatever. My only real problem is this: all sound effects like gunfire, footsteps, grav-lift noises, etc. and also music and ambience stuff is working fine......but no voices. as in, when i go into basic training there's no instructional voice, when i open logs, theres no sound. For example, when you first enter the von braun, you recieve an email that basically tells you that a bunch of debris is about to fall on your head.......now, im assuming there is supposed to be a voice reading the email out loud, because by the time I opened the inventory, found the email menu, and read through the email, the debri fell on my head........ after this happened, i decided i wouldnt continue playing until i sorted this whole speech thing out, as it seems to be significantly taking away from the game experience......
btw.... I dont know if enabling hardware accelleration would help, but i cant seem to enable it..... and i have it set to 12 sound channels. dunno what to do.........:(
My friend has this exact same problem, did you ever find a fix for it?

Have you tried reducing hardware acceleration from Full down to Basic or None, in dxdiag?
