Every time I play, the game gets as far as picking my job, then encounters an error. It dosen't seem to be covered in the FAQ. Can anyone help me?

If you go into the folder where you installed the game, can you see a folder named 'current'?
If it ain't there, create it and see if the error stops coming.

Nope, there's a folder labeled 'current'.

Have you tried installing the video codecs for the game? The installer is somewhere on the SS2 CD as far as I can remember.
This could also be what I experienced long time ago, I fixed it by adding safe_texture_manager to the bottom of cam.cfg and shock2.cfg files.

That is odd, if there is anything in current, try delete every file there. If that doesn't work, reInstalling the game can fix many problems.

i have a strange problem with system shock 2
first my specs
<> installed the official patch from the irrational games site
<> no hardware accellerated audio
<> screen res 1024x768 - 16bit
<> running xp sp2
<> running with original patched executable with original ss2 disc
<> no compatibility mode
when whe game starts and you go out of this "metro", a voice tells you to use the elevator, .. so, for example, this voice is hacked up at the beginning, that means a part of the voice from the beginning of the sentence is missing or not played. this happens with all voices
i have the soundblaster live! player 1024 with the latest officially available drivers from 2002 (yes, must be).
the win2k patched exe and mt fixed exe doesnt work and if i enable audio hardware accelleration, the game will crash as soon as the first voice is played.
can anyone help me with this??

I'm not sure how to fix this kind of problem, but you can try messing with the acceleration setting in dxdiag, set it to basic or standard instead of full.

i set the direct audio accelleration to minimal and the voices played from the beginning! yeah!
but after a minute of moving the game frozes
any fix for random game crashes?

Do you have a processor with hyperthreading or a dualcore?

i have a Pentium 4 with 3,0 GHz and Hyperthreading (HT)
i tested the compatibility modes with my original sshock2.exe
- win 95 > crashes before game starts
- win 98 > crashes before game starts
- win nt > no cd in drive-error
- win 2000 > game starts but hangs after a few minutes, like without compatibility mode
