I installed System Shock 2 about a week or two ago, installed Rebirth and SHTUP, did the LGVID.AX thing, and booted up the game with everything running fine. After the intro cinematic ,that had sound, played and went into gameplay, I couldn't hear anything. I went into the audio options and it appeared that the EAX sound option was turned off with no way to turn it back on. What would anyone recommend me to do to fix this problem?

Sounds like someone stopped the signal :D
Anyway, have you tried using dxdiag to alter the Hardware Sound Accelleration Level?

Alright, i'm having the same problem as many of these folks. When I try to run System Shock 2, everything works fine. I can navigate in the main menu, change binds, change video settings, audio settings etc. Then, when I try to start a new game, the screen just goes black after the Intro movie. There is no error message. There is no sound. The screen just goes black and I am forced to "ctrl+alt+del" back to desktop and stop System Shock 2.
The same thing occured when I tried to play Theif: The Dark Project. I managed to fix the error with Theif, but that was ages ago and I cannot remember how I fixed it. I seem to remember I had to switch Theif into software rendering mode, but that option is nonexistant in System Shock 2. This leads me to believe that it may be a problem with my hardware (nVidia GeForce4 420 MX video card).
I have the final patched version of System Shock 2. Running in compatibility mode does not make System Shock 2 work (I have tried 95 and 98/ME compatibility modes)
EDIT: I just tried running Theif again, and it works fine. Now, why won't System Shock 2 work. agh.
EDIT2: System Specs, if it will help.
OS: Windows XP Pro (SP2)
CPU: Pentium Celeron ~800mHz
Video Card: nVidia GeForce4 MX 420 (64mb)
Video Card Firmware: 84.21
More information available upon request.
PROBLEM SOLVED!
SOLUTION: Download (
http://files.moddb.com/1639/download-system-shock-2-winxp2000-fix/) this XP fix. Backup the old sshock2.exe. Copy and past the sshock2.exe supplied in the download. Then just start up using the fixed .exe!
NOTE: THIS IS NOT A NO-CD CRACK, YOU STILL NEED THE SYSTEM SHOCK CD.
Alright, time to go play system shock 2 :)

Well, as many folks have said, compability mode is anything but useful in the case of SS2. ;)

I am unable to get SS2 cutscenes to play at all in-game (thankfully, the game itself runs fine). I've tried all the cutscene tricks in the OP and I've still got nothing.
I tried to play the cutscenes in WMP10 but it won't play video only audio. I don't know why, but it looks like the Indeo codec is not being recognized. I've tried the IV5Play on the SS2 CD, as well as 2 other Indeo packs the people have used to get these files to play and still no dice.
DivX Player plays the files fine and it's using the Indeo codecs so I'm not sure what's going on. Any ideas?

Perhaps you are using a codec pack that's freaking out Windows?

From the point of view of making a portable install, it's nice, but I have two questions...
- why not just create nul-filled files on the drive you want to install on until the percieved free space wraps around, then delete them afterwards?
- aren't load times off of a CF card going to be
hideous compared to off a hard drive?
The bigger concern is that loading/writing data constantly off a CF card will very very drastically limit the card's life - compactflash has a limited number of read/writes!

I am now one smug bugger!!!!
After re-buying the game at the start of the year I tried for months to get the damn thing to work on xp with no success. I have tried all the patches and advice given out on this, and other, forums.
Finally though I got SS2 to work perfectly with not a single crash, error message or anything else for that matter. In case it helps here is what I did.
1. completely removed all traces of the game and patches from my pc
2. installed (for the 1,345th time) the game
3. set the compatibilty to windows 2000:eek:
4. started the game:wot: :wot:
5. got excited when the game began;)
6. almost came when i grabbed me wrench and began to take on the many:angel:
so basically if it helps try what I did and best of luck to one and all!!!!
(next stop getting Dungeon Keeper 2 to work perfik on xp and all)
