I've run into another problem, I cannot save. It says "Not enough disc space", (which is of course wrong) at the top of the screen. I can quick save and quick load, but the quick save is erased when I start up the game again. Does anyone know how to fix this?

That's odd.
Check that you have current-directory in your shock directory.
And check that you don't have read-only file attribute set on your shock files and sub-directories in your shock directory, too.

I'm running SS2 with the 2.03 final patch in WinXP. However, the game crashes at random points during gameplay. It usually occurs right after I step off the train at the very start. I've had to reboot after the game crashes several times.
So, I've tried to set the Windows compatibility of the SS2 EXE file as suggested at the beginning of this thread, yet that doesn't seem to have much effect.
My laptop specs are:
Averatec 6100 Series, 3Ghz Processor, 512 MB RAM.
I wish I knew what was causing the crashes, as SS2 v2.03 seems to work fine otherwise whilst run under WinXP on my machine. Any assistance or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Is the processor a dualcore or hyperthreaded?
If either of those apply, disabling one core should fix your problem.
By the way, using compability for SS2 actually makes things worse, so avoid using that. :)

I downloaded my copy of System Shock 2 from Home of the Underdogs, legally of course :-D. I'm pretty sure it came with the patch, but I'm going to dl and run it anyway and see if that helps. But anyway, the problem I'm having with ss2 is that it runs fine and everything except when i start a new game. At random intervals, the game will totally freeze up and not allow me to alt-tab or ctrl-alt-delete. This happens at random times, I've had it happen as soon as I get off the tram to all the way in the middle of advanced training, but never any farther then that. The only way to get out of the freeze is to restart my computer. Any ideas?
EDIT: Just dl'ed the patch, but when I run it, it says it can't verify that I have ss2 installed. I would assume its a registry problem, because the game was downloaded from Home of the Underdogs and not installed in a normal fashion. Any way to fix this?

Thanks to every one for posting every conceivable fix for running this classic game on winXP. As someone posted ( cannot remember who) every machine is configured differently and therefore the problems are sometimes unique.
I only encountered 2 problems after installing and applying the patch. First was the black screen after choosing your career. That was a quick fix by changing to single processor in task manager.
The 2nd one was lack of music after playing the game for a while. Eventhough it gives a scarier atmosphere, somehow playing without music was just a different experience.
So, after reading this forum for a fix and found nothing i went back to the game and tinkered around in audio options and finally managed to get music started.
The fix, just reverse the speaker. That's it, that simple.
Anyhoo, i thought i'd post this fix, in case anyone's got the same problem as i did.
Hope EA will have a great game developed to complete the SHODAN trilogy.
Happy gaming, gamers.

I've obtained the game and installed it, was already patched to version 2.3. I've run the IV5PLAY.EXE, registered LGVID.AX, ticked compatibility mode for SHOCK2.EXE, applied a No-CD patch as the SHOCK2.ICD was giving me problems, and when I try to run the game, the screen goes black for a while as if it was starting up, then kicks me back to Windows with this error message:

It would really help if you could offer us at least a rough english translation of the text in the error dialog.
