Just been experimenting with something that may help with retro-fitting your PC to run past games. For all those who cannot run certain games because of the 2Gb size limitation here is a potential solution!
Some of the earlier C&C games refused to run on Windows XP (which comes up as Windows 5.0 or 5.1 depending on the Service packs you've installed). There is a way around this (works on System Shock 2 when the PC is more stubborn than usual:mad: ) by means of using a USB 2.0 (not 1.0, too slow :nono: ) multi-format card reader (it says reader but actually your run-of-the-mill reader can also write:cheeky: ) and a run-of-the-mill memory card that the reader can handle. Please make sure the capacity size is greater than 512Mb but no greater than 2Gb, I would recommend a 2Gb CF Lexar solid-state 80x memory card and not a microdrive or otherwise you'll be suffering from a lag in seek times.
During installation (usually forced one way or another) be sure to set the target installation drive as the CF card in your reader. The installation should proceed comfortably and as far as the game is concerned your drive is not excessive so it will be satisfied running smoothly.:thumb:
For those who doubt this is even possible, one of my earlier attempts was on Windows XP installing C&C: Tiberian Sun to a 2Gb CF card, this worked without a flaw and has since proven this is possible with more than this title alone.
P.S. Do NOT try to run said games with memory card absent from reader otherwise you'll end up with an icon on your screen telling you this program does not exist!:wot:
Hope this helps and happy gaming!

that's actually pretty ingenious.

Bug solution: System Shock 2 crashes on choosing profession after training
"Shinichi", I think your name is, thankyou so much. I had this problem on a single-processor XP-Pro PC, and the solution was indeed to uninstall my 3ivx codec.
I later had problems with still being able to attack, but not use the inventory when in inventory mode, but the advice on the FAQ about manually editing the bindings files fixed that.
Many thanks- thought I'd repeat the above solution since (as of when I looked,) it wasn't on the FAQ.

From the point of view of making a portable install, it's nice, but I have two questions...
- why not just create nul-filled files on the drive you want to install on until the percieved free space wraps around, then delete them afterwards?
- aren't load times off of a CF card going to be hideous compared to off a hard drive?

Alright, definitely the best, the only, and the ultimate fix for all of you System Shock 2 junkies is here: It works for any version of the game, be it the cd version, the iso rip of the internet, or the debateable "underdogs" version. Install everything using win 2000 compatibility[which means win200 compatibily for all exe files] and run shock2.exe win 2000 comp. Works for all Athlon 64 comps guaranteed. tried it on 3200+ 3800+ and 4400+.
Good luck all you system shock 2 junkies. if its your first time.. go slow.. be gentle.. savor every moment

Thanks to you guys I managed to fix a few problems. I now have SShock 2 running with only one CPU enabled which allowed the game to run. I also set it to run in Windows 2000 compatibility mode as well, which fixed a few more things. I'm only left with one problem, whenever a movie plays my game crashes!
When I first installed SShock 2 when I tried to play it just skipped the movies but I wanted to see them so I installed the Indeo codecs and did that registry fix, and now it crashes whenever it tries to play a movie so I can't start a new game anymore! I'm 99.9% I've had SShock 2 installed and running on this same computer a while back WITH the movies working. Any ideas? I really want to start a new game...preferably with movies.
I have the latest version of Windows XP, DivX, etc.

When using my inventory, when I try and select anything my weapon will fire, and inventory items stay untouched. Has this happened to anyone?

This has happened to so many people and been posted about so many times that this would normally earn you a sharp smack with the Lead Pipe.
However, I've just finished Exile and am in a good mood, so I'll spare you all of ten seconds of searching and simply (

Hey, I have had System Shock 2 loaded on a PC before which i believe was Win 98 and everything worked fien, Now i have it loaded under XP, and everytime I try and play the game it keeps asking for me to place the CD in the drive. The CD is in the drive, and well I don't feel like using a no-cd patch, Anyone have an idea on what may have caused this?
