Bit of an odd problem here. When I reinstalled Shock2 to play Christine's update to Ponterbee Station I noticed a bit of a peticularity.
When I played Shock2 the cutscenes play fine, everythign starts up as it should, ect ect.
Windows will not play the cutscenes. VideoLAN viewer will only play the audio half of the video. Windows Media player on the other hand would only do the video without audio.
After installing ponterbee the only video that worked in game was her CS2(well whichever oen plays right after the space station training).
I am using windows 98, 16MB video ram, and no I'm not sure which version of nVidia's drivers I'm using.

The cutscenes are Indeo 5.0 video (IV50) with uncompressed PCM audio (ARAW). VLC does not yet include an IV50 decoder, and will not use system codecs, so you only get the audio.
The fact that WMP only gives you video implies that you don't have the PCM codec installed, but (1) that shouldn't be possible and (2) if you get sound from them in SS2 you clearly do. So it's more likely that WMP is muted or just plain broken.
Can't help you with the Ponterbee stuff, though.

Okay, well, you see, I couldn't play my system shock2 game...
After I patched the game, I could watch the intro movie (foolish hackers...), then a little error box would pop up terminating the game.
I promised myself that I would post my findings on the forum.
After hours of work... I got the game working YAY! But I didn't post the findings (yet). When I reinstalled the game... I forgot how to get it work!! KARMA... er... anyway... took me another few hours to get the game working... so I shall post my findings...
Problem: After Intro MOvie, game freezes...(something about direct 3d)
My solution(may not work for all)
1) patch game
2) get 2.3 crack from ********
3) open cam.cfg scroll down, and add the text: safe_texture_manager
4) repeat step 3 for shock.cfg
5) play( using crack)

I am running a downloaded version of System Shock 2 on Windows XP Professional with no Service Packs. When I run shock2.exe, it brings up the menu for SS2. I am running under 800 x 600 resolution. I was using Windows 95 Compatibility Mode, until I got a patch for Windows XP to allow it to run under no Compatibility Modes. I backed up by own shock2.exe, and swapped it with the given (in the patch) one. I ran the patched shock2.exe, yet when I open it, it says I need the CD. I downloaded this version via BitComet, a BitTorrent client. I have no clue what to do...

We don't help with illegal versions of the game. Go away.

I have a problem with System Shock 2 on my XP system that I haven't seen mentioned: when I hit ESC to leave the game and go to menu, and then hit ESC (or continue) to resume the game, the ambient sound is much too loud.
The only way to avoid this is either to adjust the volume while in the menu (merely looking at the volume options doesn't do it), or load a game while in the menu.
Anyone know a fix? I have an Audigy. Tried hardware sound on and off. Thanks.

You must install alternative drivers - KX Audio Driver. I had the same problem and it helps!!!

Thank you. However, I'm not really eager to install a whole new driver just to play an old game. Was hoping to correct something in SS2's config. But anyway, quicksave then quickload fixes the volume, so I guess that's good enough.

Hi, I'm new here to this forum but an old hand to the System Shock Series. I hope any insights I might have are of some use to you in this ongoing dilemma.
I've been trying all kinds of methods (including the update) to make System Shock 2 work under XP, in the early stages nothing worked but later, after much hashing up of my HDD:p I finally managed to get it working. The sound loss was an issue but this turned out not to be the audio drivers I was using (Sound Blaster Audigy 2). Under Windows XP the videos do not seem to work, it was a video codex problem which was rectified using both of these methods:
1) Updating XP with the latest Service Pack thus eliminating half the audio and video glitches
2) Installing DivX drivers, these eliminated any of the remaining glitches, since then the cut scenes have been reasonably workable with the occasional inoperative glitch occurring but nothing too drastic.
Please note that I used tips from the earlier parts of this discussion to perform a 'safe installation'. Without it the options screen would not even load period.
Finally, this is where the last of the glitches were cleaned up, the one item that I had not tried until a few months ago was to change the icon's own settings to force System Shock 2 to work on XP. Probably already been mentioned before but it doesn't hurt to recap, here goes:
A) Right click on System Shock 2 icon
B) Go to PROPERTIES at the bottom of the list of options available
C) From here you should go to the SHORTCUT tab
D) In the box with TARGET: should be your shortcut settings for SS2, change these from this:
F:\Sshock2\SHOCK2.EXE
into this
F:\Sshock2\SHOCK2.EXE -lgntforce
E) Click APPLY then OK to complete
F) If works, you now have System Shock 2 working on Windows XP!!!:thumb:
Happy gaming and hope this helps!
P.S. This was not a hacked version of SS2 but a full version installed from CD.

Sorry about that last part, forgot to clarify the following:
Change from:
F:\Sshock2\SHOCK2.EXE
To:
F:\Sshock2\SHOCK2.EXE -lgntforce
Where F:\ is your HDD, most are usually C:\ owing to a botched initial installation I ended up with my HDD being called F:\:weird:
Hope it helps!:thumb:
