ok, i figured out the solution to my problem (posted above), it turns out all you have to do is disable "Hardware Acceleration" in the "Audio" tab of the options menu in-game. So here it is, in simplified form:
Problem: Loading a saved game from the menu crashes and gives you an error (in WinXP) that identifies the problem as shock2.icd or shock2.exe (the latter occurs when you use a no-cd crack or a fixed .exe)
Solution: Go to the Options menu, click on the "Audio" tab, turn OFF "Hardware Acceleration". (weird solution, I know, but it works!)

Running SS2 (haven't patched it myself) on XP Pro SP2, Pentium 4 2.92GHz, 1024 MB, ATI Radeon. Installed without a hitch, ran like a dream - a good dream - until this morning (apart from the hyperthreading thing, obviously).
Since this morning, the game seems to start properly, displaying the main menu. If I select load game, that menu displays correctly with its sound effects. But when I try to load a saved game - any game - the load screen appears and the game hangs immediately. No error message, no nothing; Task Manager reports that it's "not responding."
I tried a system restore back to before this started, but that didn't work.
Any suggestions?
Given all the problems reported here, I'd prefer not to reinstall if I can avoid it...
EDIT it gets weirder...
Patched it: that didn't work. Restarted a couple of times without success.
Now I've discovered that if I load my earliest save, it's ok; and once I'm in, I can load any save I want - with no problems.
How (and why) can this be?

I think I had this problem too, but I found no way to fix it. You just save in two save slots, one is your main save and the other slot is a backup one. If either of the savegames get this problem, simply use the other slot and save over the corrupted version.
That´s my way of bypassing this.

It's probably been posted in this thread before, but I still can't install the game even after putting that extra thing on the end. Any help?

What error are you getting? Also, did you try locating "setup.exe" on your CD, and changing the compatibility mode to Windows 95?

Alright, I've got XP and I tried playing, It installed fine and everything, except theres no sound, so I went about the compatibility modes for 98 and 95, but both had the blank screen after loading up a new game problem. Any ideas on what to do?

Tried that, same error. It says "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application."

I remember someone asking what version of safedisk sshock2 uses
it uses v1.11.000 which can be removed with unsafedisc by r!sc or
safedisc annihilator by arthaxerxes.
Edit
I need a windows xp patch with no cd patch applied, so I could play sshock2 via internet with meh mates without the need to run to each others houses and enter the cd, start the game, and go to another house...
I have a valid copy of the game, the cd is in quite bad shape so we are unable to make a copy of it.
2nd edit
Problem solved :)

search your hdd for autoexec.nt and copy it to your C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ folder.thats all.

OK, I've just installed SS2 and the game works except the cutscenes won't play. I haven't had the pleasure of playing this game before, so I'd like to have them if possible.
I believe I've tried everything posted here. I tried running iv5play.exe and I've tried registering D:\games\sshock2\LGVID.AX (I was always notified that registration had succeeded). I've also tried manually replacing ir50_32.dll that I extracted from iv5play.exe.
A couple of people got the videos to work by installing the DivX player/codecs so I tried that. I can now get the videos to play in the DivX player but other than that nothing has changed (i.e. the game won't play them and neither will wmp or any other player). Is there a way to get the game to use this DivX codec instead?
Any ideas?
