Ok, well since there haven't been any more suggestions for my (weird??) problem and no one else seems to have come up with it, I've gone ahead and ordered SS2... and Thief 2... and Gabe Knight 3.... (9 AUD = 7.84 CAD each)
CHEAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :thumb: thanks Kidmystic :)
The shipping costs will bite my derrière, but at least I have three good games on the way :p
I'm curious though, so I'll keep trying to solve the CPU issues... Haven't been able to reproduce it on a Win2000 install, so I suppose it's something XP-specific. If I find the solution, I'll post it here.

I'm sorry if this has been covered, I didn't see it in the first ten pages.
I have:
Win XP Home, fully updated
ATI Mobility Radeon 7000 IGP
960 MB RAM
3.2 GHz Pentium 4
After a recent reformatting of my hard drives, I went to do my usual fresh-computer-ritual of beating System Shock 2 a few times [sic]. This is the same computer I used last time, largely without error on single-player, and the reinstall *should* have resulted in teh computer being configured about the same now as it was then, but that's really beside the point.
Issues:
1)The one about Direct3D blah blah blah. I'm looking into that, don't know if fixes worked yet.
2)Using that very first power cell in the game sets off all triggers in the area. I don't know if other zones would all have their triggers set off early or not, as the random complete crashes (some like in #1, some not) make it hard to get to another area (or even to that first power cell!). By "all triggers," I mean that all the doors open, all the ambushes spawn (a maintenance droid and 6 hybrids against a guy with a wrench? :eww: ), all objectives of just that area are completed, and the turrets by the charger go off. Several e-mails from "Polito" happen at once too. Crates and cameras are unaffected, replicators don't get hacked, *most* things don't blow up, but that's about it.
3)Seemingly random and wildly varied crashes, as mentioned in #2. Sound loops, black screens, error messages, sound loops, BSOD (Blue Screen Of Doom), complete system locks--it's all there, but only one at a time.
4)Attempting to run compatibility mode crashes the game, except in 2000, which doesn't do squat anyway.
Ideas? Sorry if some of this (besides #1, which I'm looking into) was covered already.
I DID try a reinstall.

Hi guys, if your game loads but instantly crashes to desktop when you hit start game, or intro or credits, delete all your videos under cutscenes. That should work.

Hey, I tried alot of the stuff u guys mentioned, and my system shock2 works just fine, its just that at loading screens, it minimizes. I can just pop it up again and it will be right where I was but its just annoying. Also, rarely it wont start.
does anyone know how to fix this?

The game is faster on my new pc (athlon xp 2,4 GHz) than it was on my old one (athlon thunderbird 1,4 GHz)...monsters move faster, game speed is higer...is there a way to fix that (coz my brawn booster in the game powers down too fast, monsters are at me too fast to react)??
Except that i never had ANY problems with installing and runnig ss2 on winxp...installed it applied the patch...game works fine...even the skin mods...
ToxicFrog on 8/12/2005 at 15:02
@Mech.Worm: no idea - perhaps something set to always-on-top is conflicting with it? But if it keeps working after you restore it, it's not a big deal...
@Zaphod B: this issue has been covered ad nauseum, and a simple search(titles) for "SS2 too fast" should return many, many threads on the subject.
However, out of the kindness of my heart-hole, I'll replicate the solution here anyways: turn on vsync in your video drivers.

hey all, i found this faq helpful, but im still having problems with system shock 2. I just bought the game yesterday and installed it. I didn't have to add -lgmtforce and didn't have any problems during the installation (i did a FULL install). I started the game and played without any problems up until the engineering deck, where i saved and quit the game. when i tried to load the game it started loading, and then crashed just when it finished. the error it gave me said "System Shock 2 has encountered an error and needs to close." The info it gave me said that the problem was with the Shock2.icd file, so i updated the game to 2.03 and downloaded a no-cd patch. I applied the patch to one of the EXE files that came with it because the one i had had an "incorrect filesize". Now, when I try to load the game it crashes on me and says the problem is with the .exe file i just patched.
My system specs (if it really matters)
-1.7 GhZ Pentium 4
-256 MB RAM
-32 MB Riva TNT
-some generic LG CD-RW
-40 GB HD.
Other stuff
-Im not running it in any compatibility mode. I tried to, and it just crashed sooner.
-When I downloaded the no-cd patch, it said i had to unwrap the exe first, so i did, and when i tried to apply the 2.03 no-cd patch (on the 2.03 version of the game of course) it gave me an error saying "incorrect filesize!", so i ended up patching one of the .exes that came with the nocd patcher.
any ideas?

First post needs updating, i tried all the things in it + plenty of more, and finaly found solution (i believe someone said it already, but here is how)
Problem: starting game, screen went black for second or two, and back to desktop with error.
Solution: edit shock2.cfg, line: hardware 1, change it to: hardware 0
Game works, no problems encountered.
