Yes, check the process list in the task manager - this sounds like something chewing on the CPU. Odd that it's only noticeable when SS2 is running, however; perhaps your virus scanner is freaking out and grabbing lots of CPU time when SS2 starts?

I tried to run the setup with the "-lngtforce" command, and it gave me the same error message as before.

If you've solved the problem, please post the solution so that if someone comes along later with the same problem they'll know how to fix it.

Hi,
As was suggested, I tried disabling the A/V and all other programs that could interfere in the same way with System Shock 2. Nothing, and after staring at the Task Manager for a while it's apparent that 99% of the CPU is used by SHOCK2.EXE (which is an unpacked version of the executable with a NOCD). I suppose the problem lies therein.
I've tried lowering the process priority, raising it (then I have to reset my way out of SS2 since nothing works), but nothing helped. Is there anything else I could try with the fixed EXE before I buy the game again?
I have to run it off my backup now - the lesson here, NEVER leave a priceless game overnight at a friend's house :nono: My original exists but is scratched and won't read at anything above 2x it seems. And I have NO idea how to make a "perfect copy" or even if my burner supports whatever is needed to do that :grr:
So I might as well ask, does any online/physical store or chain in North America still sell SS2? I tried eBay but I'd rather check for a store first, to buy it NEW, maybe save on shipping with a couple other games and be absolutely sure it'll work! Thanks...

First off well done on the faq and thanks to everyone for posting their suggestions. I've used this faq to fix my problem, so I'll post what I did.
First off my specs are:
Intel Pentium 4 Hyperthreading 3.0 ghz
Microsoft XP home edition sp 2
ATI Radeon X600 256mb
Okay the problem I had was constant freezing before I could even complete the training, forcing me to restart in some instances. So I downloaded and installed the 2.3 patch, and that still didn't fix it. Then I found out how to fix the hyperthreading problem and so minimized the game from the menu screen, set affinity to only one cpu in task manager, and then went to play.
Then I got the incorrect memory reported by graphics card problem  , so i opened cam.cfg in the SS2 folder and added the line 'safe_texture_manager' at the bottom. Now my problems seem to be solved! Huzzah! :thumb:

also, on my pc i have to change ss2 to run on a single CPU every time i play. but on my brothers laptop, it runs fine without changing anything. wtf:confused:
ToxicFrog on 2/11/2005 at 23:32
The most likely explanation is simply that your brother's laptop doesn't have hyperthreading or multiple CPUs, or if it does, isn't running an OS that supports multiple processors.
Of course, since you have given no information whatsoever about the system in question, this is just a guess.

sorry, but i dont know the spec of my bro's laptop
