Hmn. I've got SS2 up and running fine now (see my recent two entries in this topic just above), but one problem still persists: saving from the menu screen instantly locks and crashes the game. I have to ctrl-alt-delete out and end process. Sometiems the save I made when the game crashesd will be loadable later on, sometimes not. I can still quick-save in-game with no problem.
Anyone else experience something similar? :erg:

I've had the same problem, unfortunately, I'm of little help. The problem just went away on its own. :erm: Try rebooting the computer, see if it helps, it usually solved things for me. Otherwise, be careful about your quick-saves, and watch your computer when you hard save. If your computer has an 'I'm thinking' light, watch that when you save. When it stops flickering, it's done saving, and you can end the process without loosing your save. If you don't have one, listen to the hard drive.

Ok so i have the game installed, i tried to insall the patch but keep getting the error 'can't find the installation directory' or somthing similar and make sure the game is installed correctly...
As for my other issue, i run the game and i can play for a limted time then it locks up... I can't use ctrl alt del or anything as it sits there i can move my mouse but nothing happens so i have to hard reboot.
It's just random when it locks up.
I have a P4 3ghz w/HT, 1gb ddr2, ati 128mb 300 (PCI-E)....
I havn't installed that patch on the first page cause im still trying to do the multiplayer patch first... My system has HT tech, but doesn't use duel cores so im not sure if ill still need the patch displayed on the first page.
So any ideas why the patch cant locate the file, and how to fix it?

thanks for this f.a.q. and further tips in the thread - i finally got ss2 to work on my rig! last time i tried it didn't work out at all. i might as well post just what i did as it might help someone else.
here's my specs:
Antec Sonata 380W
Abit AV8 K8T800
AMD Athlon 64 3500+
Kingston DDR 400 1024MB
Seagate Barracuda 200GB
ATI Radeon X800XT PE 256MB
SoundBlaster Audigy 2 ZS
Windows XP Pro SP2
ViewSonic VP201B 20"
latest drivers and directx.
here's how i did:
1. full install of the game. no problem there.
2. patched with shkpatch.exe [update: for some reason i had to run it from inside the main ss2 folder, as it couldn't find the path otherwise. see comments below for more info on this.]
3. patched with shock2_xp_2000_fix
4. added "safe_texture_manager" in shock.cfg
5. didn't change compatibility mode för shock2.exe
6. voilá!
i think it was the "safe_texture_manager" that was different from my last try.
with Rebirth_Beta_1, shtup_beta5, AAx6 and AFx16 it looks rather nice as well!

Did you run it from inside the main SS2 folder? If not, I think that's the problem.

The patch executable don't need to be run in installation folder. It finds correct installation directory by looking it from registry. If you have incorrectly installed System Shock 2 or you have changed folder name to another name then it will show that message.

If you say so, but when I installed the game earlier today, the patch couldn't find the correct path - it did so, however, when I ran it from the SS2 folder.
And it was a correct installation with no folder name changes. Perhaps I should have restarted the computer before applying the patch?
Anyway, it worked.

Hi, I need some help...
I'm trying to get SS2 (patch 2.3) running under :
- WinXP sp1
- Athlon XP 1700+
- 512 Mb RAM
- ATI All-in-Wonder 9600XT with the latest Catalyst drivers.
My problem : Stuck in the load menu, the mouse responds extremely *slowly*, the cursor moves once every twenty seconds, it seems. The mouse is a PS/2 optical wireless with fresh new batteries.
I've applied the XP patch, and the game isn't modded. I've read through the FAQ and this thread... I don't know where to start looking since no one came up with a similar problem :( People complain it's too fast for them, not too slow!
Thanks...

Do you have any other programs running on background?
