my problem was the following: everything went just fine, until i passed the training missions and the loading screen appeared, after which the game just crashed to the desktop
alright after searching this thread for like 2 hours i got myself a beer and some more beer and after a while i figured to switch "hardware acceleration" (in audio) off, the really stupid thing about this is that i had been thinking all the time that i had already done that.
worked just fine. gonna go play sshock2 now (if i'm still able to hit the hybrids that is)
don't know if it has been mentioned before, but whatever
i've got some kinda celeron or something and a geforce 2 mx and onboard sound i think

I can't seem to get it to work, either. I'm running an ATI Radeon 9800 pro 256 graphics card, and when I turn down hardware acceleration, it says my graphics card isn't compatible. I tried patching the file, compatability on the .exe, and making a .cfg (though I'm not sure if I did the .cfg right). Any ideas?
Edit: The problem I've been having is that the game crashes when it loads a new area. Once I'm in the area, everything works fine.

Well, I guess I'll add my dilemma to the ever-growing lsit here, see if anyone's got an idea about it.
What I have: WinXP SP2 P4 2.6 1GB Radeon X800XL 256MB
What happens to me is this: Using Win98 or Win98 compatibility mode, the game errors out and won't start up at all. Yet using NO compatibility mode the game will start up and run fine for a few minutes. After those few minutes of playing, the game locks up and won't do anything. As I do with Thief Gold, I ctrl-alt-delete out of the title screen and set hyperthreading affinity to one processor. But with SS2, it doesn't make any difference--it freezes up whether I do that or not. I've tried the game patched and unpatched, with 16 bit and 32 bit desktop color. Nothing helps.
Any ideas? :erg:

Did you apply one CPU to both Shock2.exe and Shock2.icd?

Err...no. Only one of them. :o
That seems to have solved the problem for me. Thanks, Bjossi.

I've got a problem. I patched the game, was able to launch it, but still I am unable to play it. The game freezes every damn moment so it's difficult even to move. I think that the problem is in my in-built AC-97 sound system. I may be wrong, but could i somehow SWITCH OFF the sound just to make sure?
And my PC specs, just in case:
Athlon XP 1600+
512 MB RAM
GF MX 4400

try lowering your sound acceleration to zero.

Thanx, I will. BTW, it is the sound system. Unfortunately, my old SB64 gave up the ghost a month or two ago. :(

Hey everyone thanks for all the help you guys have done for me and everyone who has these problems.
I wanted to play SS2 again with my friends so they can all experience this great game. But us having XP it didnt work. I went through so many hours reading this stuff, i tried all the stuff put out here and all fixes and cracks and all that. the farthest i've gone was when you enter to pick what profession and it shows the video, but when it tries to load it makes the error sound for a message you cant see. I tried many things on here, some fixing the things they are suppose to but adding another problem where i had to try that fix, which added yet a different problem.
Finally i got down to this. It wasnt installing from the CD so i had to copy it onto the hardrive. Then i could install it. After a while of trying to fix everything (wasnt even starting up) i found it really does like the default C:\Sshock2\ folder a lot (I was also putting it into My Docs, i know not smart:erg: ). Then thats where i got as far as professions and it would crash to desktop when it tries to save/load. I had the rebirth mod installed and the better texture mod. As i was reading through rebirth they said how to fix robots and such from being invisable (cause I noticed he was gone when i passed him to the profession area). It told me to go to install.cfg and change resname_base to c:\sshock2\res+D:\shock instead of it pointing to the folder that i copied the CD into for installation it pointed it to the CD in the drive. This fixed a lot of things from being inviable, and it fixed my sound which i seen some of you had the same prob, just i didnt notice it for me cause i can still hear the announcers telling me what to do. In install.cfg i noticed that a lot of the paths pointed to the install folder like resname_base was. So i made a backup and pointed all except the script module path to the CD path like this:
cd_path D:\shock
install_path C:\Sshock2
language english
resname_base c:\sshock2\res+D:\shock
load_path D:\shock\shock
movie_path C:\Sshock2\cutscenes+D:\shock
And it worked!...somehow. I dunno if this helps for any of you but you might wanna try just in case for those with the same problems i listed in this long post (sorry). I doupt it will work if you want a NO CD thing on it, try it though. If you use daemon tools i think you can direct it to the simulated drive for use.
Thanks,
Mike
Edit: New problem, i cant interact with anything in my inventory, cant click and drag or anything like that. if i click stuff it just swings my weapon (which i had to equip with hotkeys) as if i wasnt in the inventory.
