On my . . . not too healthy  old computer, I literally can't even risk running any of the Dark engine games without reinstalling the codecs first. They always gets uninstalled every bloody time I play. If the codec isn't installed, and the game tries to load a movie . . . well, she freezes, and she freezes good. I usually have to yank out the power cord. I'd honestly prefer it if the game just flat out crashed.

Ran iv5play, it said I already had newer versions of all the codecs installed.
Another clue: after running the game, there's a new icon in my systray, looks like a little blue monitor. Disappears when I mouse over it, so whatever process causes it has already terminated by the time I see the desktop again.

Hmmm. You're crashing before you'd have a chance to alt-tab out of the game, so that's out of the question. Let's see here . . .
Do you have a file called "LGVID.AX" in your SS2 directory? If not, I think you can find it on your SS2 CD, although it's been a while since I moved it around last.
Once it's in your directory, open Notepad, and paste this line into it:
"regsvr32 D:\sshock2\LGVID.AX"
Just change the "D:\sshock2\" part of the line to match your SS2 directory. Save it as a file called, say, "cutscene_cure.bat" (the file extension must be ".bat", don't let Notepad add a ".txt" extension), put the file on your desktop maybe, somewhere easy to get to. Run the .bat file, then run SS2, see if it does anything. :)

"DllRegisterServer in lgvid.ax succeeded", but again, no change. Maybe it's not the codecs at all?
TheNightTerror on 2/6/2005 at 05:19
Hmmm, weird. It might not be the codecs, this oughta be a good way to find out one way or the other. Open "cam.cfg" (it's in your SS2 directory) with Notepad, and add the following line, it doesn't matter where:
skip_intro
Save it, make sure the .txt extension isn't added to the file name, and try to load SS2 again. What that line does is tell the game not to play movies when the game first starts, it's added after the first time you close the game, I think. If you still can't make it to the main menu, it's definitely something else.

I´m getting very pissed off because of a problem I´m having with savegames.
I doubt it´s XP only but who knows?
Ok, here´s what´s wrong. It happens rarely, but it´s still annoying when it happens. When I save, sometimes I get a protocol droid in my face when opening a door in Engineering, so I load.
And guess what, the loading bar doesn´t move at all. Ctrl + Alt + Del does nothing but even worse. The screen is there and the loading bar stays empty. Thank god I use two savegames that I save zigzag.
(I save the upper save slot, then the lower slot, again the upper slot etc.)
Is there a fix for this or at least a way to bypass it?

Ughh, I've been spending all day trying to get SS2 to work on my PC and all that I have to show for it is a headache and my eyes burn a bit. Anyways, maybe someone can help me out. Im running an older PC ... really old really. I used to be able to play SS2 on it till I reformated and started running Win2k instead on 98. So, I installed it. That part went fine. Now here is where things get frustrateing. If I try to change the compatabilty mode the game will just crash about 90% of the time before it can even start. I just get an error window. Now... if I turn that off the game starts. I go to start a new game and things are going fine. It plays the intro movie and starts to load the game then when it is almost done the game just stops and goes back to the desktop . No error message nothing... Once I got the game going but the graphics were messed up and the colors were way off. After that I started to fool around with compatabiltiy modes and all the other fixes and it wouldnt work again... I tried reinstalling and no luck.

Definitely sounds like a graphics problem. My knee jerk reaction is you need the safe_texture_manager fix. It's a good place to start. To use it, open Notepad, and simply write "safe_texture_manager" in it. Save the file with the name "user.cfg", in your SS2 directory, and try to run the game again.
It's ironic, but the compatibility modes have never done anything but cause more problems for me when I try to use them with Dark engine games, I'd steer clear of it. Also, can you give us your system specs? Just in case the safe_texture_manager fix doesn't work, knowing at least what your video card is could help. My guess is the problem is there, maybe the drivers for it need updating now that you're running a new OS?

Heh, Im worried my comp might just hate the game.
Well let me list what I have tried-
Compatabilty - Makes things worse
I've done the safe texture thing
My vid card drivers are recent
I've tried supposed "fixed" exe's and the like
Uninstalling and reinstalling
Curseing
Witchcraft
and crying.
Now for my comp info:
400MHz P2
Win2k Sp4
Nvidia Riva TNT 16mb
392 MB DDR ram
I think that is all about right. Im pretty tired and my eyes are dry and burning from screwing with this all day... I dunno, maybe I am just too frustrated right now to be able to really do anything but... well hopefully I can find a way to play. I was really hopeing to play SS2 , its been awhile since I last played it and I really wanted to go down the Psi path. I had only focused on hacking and junk before.
[edit] - Ok, I just started up the game ,with the safe texture on and with a fixed exe, and this time I went to the options and changed the resolution before starting and this time the game started but the colors were messed up. Also, Video work fine and the game seems to work... but the colors are still messed up.

Man, I've been there before. I didn't patch my installation of the game, and the first copy of the game I had (which I paid $70 for) crashed when the first voice played. I spent 2 years trying to make it work before I bought a pre-patched copy of the game that worked, so I know how frustrating it can get. Which reminds me . . . you have patched the game, right? Or is it the EA Classics version?

Hmmm. I'm just throwing out a random guess again. Open "cam.cfg", and do a text search for the line "game_hardware". In my file, here's what it says:
Quote:
game_hardware 1
game_screen_depth 16
Check to see if your file reads the same thing. Maybe the game_screen_depth line got changed somehow, if the colors are messed up. If that doesn't work, let us know, and go get some sleep. ;) It's hard to do much when you haven't slept.
