In SS2, are you using hardware acceleration? If you are, turn it off, if you're not, turn it on.

Wow, after using the hyperthreading fix on the unwrapped EXE I can run it without having to mess with my registry and/or restarting in non-hyperthread mode!

I installed System Shock 2 under XP(inc patch 2.3), failed to load. I then installed the XP Patch, and now it runs, but whenever I try to load a save it crashes just as its about to finish loading. Any help would be appreciated.

Hey,
I've found a *strange* way to make SS2 work on XP. I can't explain why it works, but that's the only way to make SS2 runs on my machine....
I simply.... run Dromed, go into Game Mode (you appear in the void), press ESC, and select 'Return to main menu', then 'New game'....
And it works. Problems : the character doesn't seem to have a correct number of energy/psy points. And when you reach 0 energy points, you don't die...... I know, that's a problem. But perhaps someone who know Dromed better that me could find a try (changing parameters somewhere ?)...

Having recently install XP with SP1, I found this out.
MS left out the Indeo codecs for the service pack. If you go to the Indeo webpage you have to fucking buy them. However, I came across another forum with the solution.

Before I install the codecs, SS2 would not play under any compatibility modes. The fix for cutscenes not playing did not work either. However, since installing it, SS2 runs fine.
David! Update the FAQ!

So what if you've:
1) Done the correct install
2) Updated XP and all nVidia card drivers
3) Installed the missing codecs
4) Tried every compatibility mode
5) Prayed to most known gods and few you made up yourself
6) Clicked on the 'play' button
AND
The CD spins and spins and spins but absolutley nothing happens...then it stops. Just like before I did all that stuff.

My Shock2 disk is in a bit of a bad way, so after much polishing and grinding I managed to get it working in ancient 4x CDrom drive on a Windows 2000 laptop. Well Chuffed the CD Actually worked, I Tried in again in a Pentium III-733 XP machine - Sadness ... it didn't work ....
So installed shock2 on the laptop (using the NT Install method), patched it and added the mods (rebirth etc) then shifted the entire Shock2 installation across a wireless network (and weeks later :bored:) onto my XP machine. My last problem was that the CD (obviously) still didn't work in the XP box, so (as I own a copy of Shock2) I popped over to game copy world :o and picked up the no-cd executable. So rather than installing it under XP, I copied the W2k installation.
After modifying the configs to get the Drives right for rebirth etc. It works lovely. The setup is as follows:
Pentium III - 733mhz - 512mb RAM
Nvidia Geforce2 MX (Drivers 5.2.1.6)
Creative PCI64V Sound Card
Windows XP SP1 fully patched
the laptop is a pentium III-1GHz, 256Mb RAM, W2Ksp4 + all latest Patches, ATI Rage Mobility AGP, ESSMaestro PCI Sound Card.
I get everything I expect - which is cool, although oddly enough if I put compatibilty mode on it locks and dies.
The moral is - Find a working copy (friend or whatever) hoof their installed copy onto a CD and copy that onto your XP Machine, lob in your CD and you're away with a mixer (fingers crossed)
While it doesn't fix the problem it circumvents it - I hope this was a little helpful - if a little waffley!
Before anyone asks - I can't play Shock2 on a laptop - need big screen, huge sound and cursor keys that are usable
