I think that might be a compatability error... I had the same... once... it fixed itself for no apparent reason...
well at least i know someone is around here... and not to be mean or anything... but thats very helpful
oh and BTW:
when ever i C+A+D it says that system shock is still using pretty much all available CPU ... so maybe it's doing something...

anyone?

Ok, heres the thing guys, I installed SS2 on XP the same as last time, when it worked perfectly, however I start it up now and I find a strange graphical glitch where theres a strip about 3/4 of the way up the screen where I can see through walls and so on. Anyone got a clue what I need to do to fix this? Is it my graphics card drivers (Which I think have been updated since the last time i played) or have I just screwed up the installation?

ESKIMO:
Every AMD machine I've ever tried does the exact same thing. It either works or it doesn't. If it doesn't, try a different computer - I've spent years trying to fix that one. I figured it was an AMD/Nvidia mixture that caused it, but other people (on this forum) seem to have got it working on such a rig - somehow - and you have a Radeon anyway.
Mr_D:
My older rig with a Voodoo 2 card did much the same thing. Turned out the video card wasn't plugged in properly. Well, actually my PCI bus was melting, but it's much the same thing. Do other games have similar problems?

No, thats the thing, everything else runs perfect. (except Doom 3 which runs like a slide show but that's a different problem all together :cheeky: )

Ok, in that case, at least post your system specs so people have a clue what you've got to work with. ;)

Good point! I'd completely forgotten about that.
AMD Athalon XP 2400 2.00Ghz
512MB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 (MSI)
As you can probably tell I don't know much about computers except how to play games on them, so if you need anymore info you'll have to specify. In laymens terms please. :laff:

And we can assume you've tried the generic fixes listed on the first page of the faq (safe_texture_manager for eg)?

so im effictvley screwed...
BTW a LONG time ago i DLed a copy of SS2 that Did work... however it was a very different package and contained many different patches/fixes... i have long sice formatted and purchased the game however my system has largely remained the same...
in other words im wondering there isnt something that can be done to correct this
(in no way am i complaining about not bieng able to run the game i am only trying to find a way to fix this problem for me and all the other that encounter this problem)
IMO (and i am in no way a game coder, but i do know a thing or two about computers): it seems to be a problem when the game tries to load the intital game texture/ environment which in no way should be affected by what CPU brand you have(AMD cpu's are in computers running on win 95/98, so there should be full support for them)... however it may be due to the motherboard which is directly affected by what brand of CPU you have... another idea is it may be affected by the GPU on the board... i have a nvidia nforce2 (anyone else with this porblem have this or anything else)

I've tried SS2 on a lot of computers. In my experience, if it has an AMD chip, any attempt to load the game engine will result in a black screen with no error messages. The machines in concern also had Nvidia video cards, I've never found an AMD box yet which doesn't have one. The same problem occurs regardless of the version of Windows used.
However, some members here apparently have AMD chips and can run the game fine. I'd very much like for them to run dxdaig, save the results to a text file, and dump that output here for me to read through. Anyone?
It's nearly 5am here and I've just spent however long trawling the web over this one (again). Simply put, I think it's got something to do with the version of DirectX used, but I'm not in the mood to uninstall DirectX right now (as it's not even something you're supposed to be able to do) so I can replace it with an older one. I doubt I can even get DirectX6 to work on XP.
So, to summarise, it only seems to happen on AMD CPUs, and it's got something to do with either DirectX or the drivers, probably both. To fix it, we need someone with an AMD rig who can run it.
This tale of surfing may or may not be interesting, I can't tell, I'm too tired. I'll type it anyway.
I went to the Irrational site. It claims EA is responsible for support for SS2. I went to the EA site, checked various sections, and found NO reference to the game, period. Which is to be expected, given that they don't even claim to own the game (except when they send letters to those who try remakes and so forth).
I ran some google checks and found support information on the Intel site. The 'incorrect texture usage' message is very common on their onboard video cards, so they actually have the fix for that one on their site. They are the only official site I could find with support info for the game, and they didn't even develop it.
I found -one- referrence to the error in which the person in concern managed to fix the problem. He used a certain 'xp fix' zip file which you can find a link to somewhere around this forum without much trouble. I tried it out (again), it didn't work (again). It's fixes the safedisc problem though, but so does the crack, so I re-installed that afterwards. (Without either, my computer simply gives me the generic XP 'this program is dead' error, and offers to send a report to Microsoft. Wonder if that would help?)
