:D
VERY great thanks! If only I was so skillful at navigating Microsoft's web page... I still don't know if the game plays though... that we shall see...

Now I've been having the same stupid problem that no one else seems to be talking about.
Whenever I try and run the game, all I get is a message saying my graphics card isn't compatible with the game. All the fixes in the world aren't changing this.
My specs are a laptop with:
P4 3.6GHz
384MB RAM (512-128 for system)
128MB ATI Mobility Radeon 9000/9100 IGP
It should work, since this laptop can also play games like Quake 2 just fine. Why is this not working then?

You have tried adding the line safe_texture_manager to user.cfg, right? And what is the exact error message? :)
Viper114 on 22/4/2005 at 03:38
Yes, but it still doesn't work. And just like I said, it says that my video card is not compatible. Which is really weird...
TheNightTerror on 22/4/2005 at 03:49
Ah, let's see here . . .
Open up "cam.cfg" with Notepad, and look for the line:
game_hardware
If it says 1 after it, change it to 0, or vica versa, whichever applies. Just make sure Notepad isn't being a bastard and applying a .txt extention to the file name. ;) Happens to me quite a bit.
Viper114 on 26/4/2005 at 17:50
Almost. I do change it, but whenever I try and run it, it still gives me that error message. I go back to see if it worked, and the file got changed the 0 to 1. After more tries, the number remained the same, but the game still wouldn't run.
I guess I just can't play it on XP. I'll have to give up since nothing works...thanks anyway.
TheNightTerror on 26/4/2005 at 21:09
Don't give up! Try making the change again, then afterwards, make the file read-only, then make sure safe_texture_manager is still in the user.cfg file, and try again. If it doesn't work, knock out safe_texture_manager just for kicks. There's gotta be a way to make it work.

Well, the game runs fine for me, except for one thing: the videos don't play. I tried regsvr already, and I updated the Indeo codecs. And when I try to open them directly in Media Player or Winamp, they crash.
Am I missing anything really important with the videos?
TheNightTerror on 4/5/2005 at 05:45
You'll be missing important info in the longer cutscenes, so you really should get them running. You can make a .bat file which only has to be run to install the movie codecs, it's pretty handy when you have a computer which will outright freeze if the codec isn't installed and a movie tries to play.
Make sure the file "LGVID.AX" is in your SS2 directory, then open Notepad, and put this line in it:
Quote:
regsvr32 D:\sshock2\LGVID.AX
You probably don't have SS2 installed to the same directory as me, just change "D:\sshock2\" to whatever your SS2 directory is. Save the file somewhere where you can find it easily, and give it an easy to remember name, such as "Cutscene Cure". You must save the file with a .bat extension, or else it won't work. Make sure Notepad doesn't add a .txt extention to the file name.
If all went well, you should only have to run the .bat file for the codec to be installed, and you'll have the movies running. :thumb:

i've read through most of this thread, and i've looked everywhere else on the internet i could find, and still have not heard of this problem: since i got my new computer, when i play system shock 2, it skips the intro movies (i don't know about any others, i haven't played through it since it started doing this), and in game, all the animations and movements for everything is significantly increased. when i run, it goes blazingly fast. and depending on which direction i'm facing, it will change speeds. and the speed fluctuates slightly even when running in one direction. (this speed is major fast, takes about a second to go a fifty feet). everything else is going fast too. but the audio still plays like normal, so nothing matches up. and i've tried all kinds of things to fix it (oddly, without the texture upgrade mod installed, the game won't go past the menu).
my system is:
winXP with service pack 2, direct x 9.0c, amd athlon 3300+, ati radeon x800 with 256 mb ram.
thanks to anyone that can help.
