I can't get the indeo codecs to work. Whenever I try to run a cutscene, in game or even in winamp, I get an error message saying the codec isnt compatable.
Yes, i've run the IV5PLAY.EXE on the CD. Yes, i've tried regestering the video drivers by running regsvr32 "x:\ss2\LGVID.AX". It still doesn't work.
Edit: Ok, before it was just an annoyance, as every time SS2 minimized to give me the error message I could just restore it, but now it seems to crash SS2. When I close the error message, another pops up:
Quote:
System Shock 2 has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
Now, not only can I not see the cutscenes, but the game is entirely unplayable!

omg... i dont plan on reading all this. So anyway, I felt like reinstalling and playing ss2, so I try to install, and i get the compatibility error that x:/setup.exe -Lgntforce fixes, but that doesnt fix it. I still get the same error as when i just pop the cd in and click install. :(

Hmmm. Explore the files on your SS2 CD. Find setup.exe, right click, set the compatibility mode to Windows 95 or 98, then try again.

arg...
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.
Hitting close freezes for a sec, then errors as it closes. Hitting ignore just closes without erroring.

um... *bump* I really really want to play ss2 again, so any help with this problem would be appreciated!

I don't know if this solution has been mentioned before, as I didn't read all the pages, so if it was, just ignore me.
After a bit of playing around, I figured out how to install Shock 2 without using the setup program. I don't know if this will have any problems down the road, but I tested it as far as halfway through Med/Sci and everything worked perfectly, so here:
1) Create a directory somewhere that you want the game to reside. For this example I'll be using c:\games\sshock2.
2) Copy all the files from the cd under the \shock directory to the directory you just created.
3) Highlight all the files and verify none of them are read-only under properties.
4) Download this - (
http://grimlan000.tripod.com/ss2installfiles.zip) (copy and paste link into a new tab) It contains three files, install.cfg, and 2 .reg files. Install.cfg will need to be edited to contain the correct paths for your particular configuration and then moved into the directory where you are installing Shock2. One of the .reg files, ss2install1.reg, needs to be edited to contain the correct paths, then both need to be entered into the registry.
5) Create a directory in your Shock2 directory called "current".
6) Install the 2.3 patch.
7) Optional: If you want the cutscenes you will still have to run IV5PLAY.EXE on the cd to install Indeo 5.06.

i've got a bit of a problem thats only been mentioned twice in this thread.. and as far as i can tell no ones answered it (and yes.. i read all 14 pages)
the game plays just fine after patching and using the XP exe.. i can get past the careers, the game runs fine, etc.. but i can't pick up any of the items in my inventory, the game seems to think im still in weapons mode and it fires the gun whenever i try to click on an item, but it lets me right click on consumable items.. so i really don't know which mode it thinks i'm in.
i don't think it's something i'm not doing.. because i've played this game dozens and dozens of times (all before i got windows XP though, which was about a year ago. i used to use windows 98) and i think i would know how to pick up items, especially since i went through the tutorial just to make sure i knew! :P the game isn't pirated either.. i've had it for a long time, i believe it's the original version.. since i had to update
my specs are:
windows xp SP1
1.4ghz amd athlon xp
384 MB SDRAM
ati radeon 9200se
whatever the newest directx is.. 9.0d or something, i just downloaded it the other day
i'm thinking of just dual-booting windows 98 with the extra partition i have until i've had my fill of SS2, heh.. but thats a last resort if no one replies to this, or no one knows what's wrong.
thanks

thanks, that worked.. i guess i forgot to search after searching through here on how to fix my original problems with XP.. and never bothered with my inventory question, heh
