Ok...Just when I thought it was all fixed...ok I do all my training and I am on the rickenbacker ( spelling?) and I proceed to the next cryo bay and decide this is a good place to save ...I save all is well and I exit the game. I come back 10 minutes later fire up the game and try to load from that spot....and it just hangs on the loading screen ...the bar dosnt even move or start for that matter. So i figure it is something to do with a CD check? So I went back in and changed the install.cfg to this....
cd_path F:\
install_path d:\games
language english
resname_base d:\games+F:\shock2fixed
load_path d:\games+f\shock2fixed
script_module_path d:\games+F:\shock2fixed
movie_path d:\games\cutscenes+F:\shock\cutscenes
Now Im not sure if thiat fixed it or not because on the next loading I picked a save point back before I picked what career path I would go on. Then I Immediatly hit esc and went to load and tried the medlab again...it loaded perfectly...exited all the way out of the game and repeated the same steps and loaded again fine...exited out of game tried to load med lab first anf locked up....
I dont think changing the install.cfg back to having some CD drive parameters in it did anything though because I havent noticed it spinning up the CD when it loads....but to be honest with you after spending the better part of a sunday screwing with this and finally getting it to work...I am not touching anything!! :)

You have screwed something up, no release of System Shock 2 came on a CD with a shock2fixed folder and you should be installing the game to something like d:\games\shock2 and not d:\games.
If you've downloaded the Shock 2 Texture fix then you need to replace the file shock2.exe in the Shock2 install folder - easily done by renaming the original to something like Shock2.old and then renaming shock2fixed.exe to shock2.exe. Before doing this make sure you have patched the game - locations for download are in the FAQ.

You are Correct on Both accounts...
1. Yes I didnt rename Shockfixed to shock.exe. ( but I changed the target of the Icon and thats all that seems to matter)
2. Yes I did scew up when I loaded the game today I ment to install it to D:games\ss2 ...I however only changed the install path to d:\games and since there was no games dir on that hard drive ( or nothing else for that matter secondary slave drive that I just wiped clean) it just created a games folder and loaded everything in there.
Yet with all of that taken into account I have been playing for the past 2 hours without any problems or crashes.
I think I am just going to leave well enough alone and keep playing :-)
You are right though I could change shockfixed to Shock.exe and retarget the start up icon and all would work as well.

I'm sure this post is redundant, but since this is an old topic I'll add in my experiences:
For Windows XP running with Service Pack 2, Direct X 9 and a Geoforce 2 MX card:
1) Install from the CD. Don't install the old version of Direct X.
2) Download the patch. I got mine from fileplanet and there was only one to choose from.
3) Do not mess with compatability settings at all... it will case the program to bomb. The patch fixes this issue and once patched it will not run in 95 or 98/ME compatibility mode.
4) I have a Geoforce 2 MX card in this machine so I had to create a user.cfg file in the system shock main directory and put in the following line of text:
safe_texture_manager
(I have to do this with all TTLG games :grr: or you just freeze up after the first movie. Thief 2 documents this problem but SS 2 does not.... *bah!*)
5) I restarted XP just for the heck of it. :joke:
Bingo..... it works.
I'll try it later on my ATI 256 MB PCI card and see how it goes. If I find any tweaks there, I'll post them. I have problems with the old Direct Show files that play the movies sometimes, but since I have Thief 2 on this machine, they were already correctly installed. Over-all, this game didn't give me much trouble.
Happy gaming all....

I'm not sure anyone is still reading these postings, but I'm at my wit's end trying to get SS2 to run. I haven't had any problems except for the crashing to black screen when choosing a career-path. As soon as I get close to the door for whatever career choice, I hear a windows "boop" (messege notification sound) and the screen goes and stays black. Searching this forum I've found a couple of things to try, like making sure the game can write in the save file, and no-cd cracks, but nothing has changed this crash. Is there anything else to try? I'm pulling my hair out over this! Also, if anyone happens to have this elusive "ss2 fix.exe" that is supposed to fix this error, could you please mail it to "renzokuken.at.hotmail.com"? Thanks in advance to anyone reading this.

Pouncing on a hunch here . . .
Where did you install SS2 to? Was it a particularly long directory? If so, simply install it to the default directory. It seems like you're getting an error message when it tries to play one of the cutscenes, the next time it happens, try pressing alt+tab to get out of SS2 to view it.

I installed it into the default \games\sshock2\ directory
I'm able to see the cutscenes before the crash, and save/load games in that interval.
Thanks for the quick reply! I didn't think anyone was going to be around.
TheNightTerror on 5/3/2005 at 00:21
Hmmm. How many cutscenes do you see before the crash? One or two? Or more?
There's usually someone around here, actually. Even long monster threads like this one get their attention. ;)

I just tried it again, and for some fluke-y reason it got past the crash point. The only thing is; I didn't do a single thing different!
Before it worked I was able to see the IR logo movie, the TTLG intro movie, and the new game vid, when I tried again this last time, I was able to see the shuttle launch vid, too. I saved my game afterwards and hopefully I can get back to that point. I'll test the glitch area again and see if it really is fixer or if it was the computer game gods messing wtih my head. I'll post with the results. Thanks again.
Edit:
Tried it again. Now I don't see the Irrational Games and Looking Glass logo movies, but the new game one plays alright. I got past the career choice point again without any trouble. Very strange... If it does anything else in relation to this problem I'll update again. Thanks again for the help, I guess just your attention convinced the game to work! :thumb:

Man, that's weird. :weird: Thing is, past those videos are more videos. Nice little collection of more videos. But hopefully it won't happen again. Just remember, if you hear another error happen, hit alt+tab, and check out the error. ;)
