I have windows Me, and SS2 won't run on it. It'll play the opening sequence, then when it's about to load the very first level (the second the bar reaches full) the screen goes black and nothing happens. I tried waiting it out, checking if it's my crappy PC. I've tried reinstalling it three times, using patches that'd allow 2000/XPs, with no avail. I'd be very thankful if anybody has a idea to solve the problem.

reinstalled w2k using a ghost of a clean install - lo and behold, ss2 works again!
I think what fucked it up was a windows update I did - after the update, when loading or starting a new game, it would ge up to the point of being about to show the level, then crashing out into windows..
tried updating graphics drivers etc to no avail - but now it works again - aaahhh... I sure as heck won't be doing any windows updates anytime soon..

Windows Update? Interesting, gotta deinstall all the updates :ebil: They're messing up my Add/Remove Programs menu anyway...
[Edit]It won't work... this time the game crashed, when I clicked Esc to get to the game menu. :(

Yup, tried that of course... some (or is it all?) of the service packs can be uninstalled, however, most updates cannot..
thus, clean install by way of a ghost, and presto! I can play ss2 again..

Hey, if I'm gonna reinstall windows, then I might as well get back to good ol' Win98SE ;)

tried that, got the scars, not going back.. ;)
but if you do, be sure to make a ghost of the installation when it's still nice and clean.. you'll appreciate it later.. ;)

So I installed ss2 and the patch version on windows xp pro and everything works fine -- movies play with sound, video works flawlessly, etc., except that I don't get in game audio. That is, I get the audio voice overs but I don't get ambience sounds, music or sound after firing a pistol, for example. I suppose I should consider myself one of the lucky ones to least get the game running, but having no sound with a game like this is not good.. Any ideas? Your help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
PS running windows xp pro on dell inspiron 8100. Updated ESS Maestro driver from june 2002 to current sept 2002, but no improvement.
Also, tried windows compability, but levels did not load under windows 95 and windows 98/me, while the other versions ran fine but again, no in game sound.

Thats odd...
Try:
start>run>dxdiag
and see if direct music and sound is working...

Ensure that the Positional Sound Slider in the Audio options menu is in the centre.
