Strange, there's no compatibility tab. :erm: What operating system are you running?

Windows 2000, but I believe the technician that installed it has changed a few settings around so I don't do anything stupid.

You need to patch the game. Check the FAQ for locations to download.

after downloading the relevant patch, i now have a new problem, now it says "system shock 2 has encountered a problem and needs to close sorry for any inconvenience", any more suggestions or should i just put the game in the bin?

By default, win2k doesn't activate the compatibility mode features, but it does have them.
You should be able to enable them with the following command:
regsvr32 %systemroot%\apppatch\slayerui.dllThis
should 'stick' even through reboots; you won't need to add it to the run-on-startup registry keys or anything.
Once enabled, the "Compatibility" tab should appear in shortcut properties (without a reboot, even O.O) and you can switch between win95, win98, and winNT4 layers. You
may (I'm not sure about that) need to have Administrator priviledges to use it, though.

;) You must've been horrified by the problem, you completely overlooked the FAQ and the answer to your problem.
