That's a classic problem, it happens to almost everyone at some point. The game can't recognize sections of your hard drive being above 2 gigabytes, I believe that's the limit. Just make a copy of a junk file and once you've added, say, 5 megabytes of junk when the game says you only have 4 free, the game should realize there's another 2 gigabytes of space free and it'll let you continue on your way. :thumb:
Edit: :o Drat beat me to it, too slow!

Like, copy some music files onto the HD? I copied 3 or 4 large video files to the comp, and it still tells me no. :(
But thanks for the replies :)

OK-right from the beginning.
Here's my system specs:
Athlon 1 GHz/ASUS A7M266 mobo/384 MB RAM/XP SP2 Pro/DirectX 9.0c/MSI GeForce4 MX 440 SE with 56.72 detonators (WHQL'ed)
I first found a pirated edition of SS2 on emule-patched to 2.3. This worked, after using safe_texture_manager in cam.cfg, but then it would crash upon reaching level 6. I figured it was due to its being pirated, some files must be corrupt etc. A while later, surprise-I find a second hand CD of the game in a shop. Now that I've got the full game, I (unwisely) delete the pirated one I had, retaining my save games. Now I go through the whole install process, apply the patch, add the textures, do the res folder trick, do the safe texture mode trick, do the Windows 98/Me compatibility mode trick (200 comp mode results in instant crash),get a no cd crack-and..launch
Whether I load a game, or start a new game, after the intro video (which plays, thankfully) I see the loading animation, hear some ambient music for a few seconds..then black screen.
Before you rush to tell me to downgrade my display driver consider this-
How does one explain a PIRATED version of the game working properly with the same config as above, and the original one crashing subsequently??
I've also tried all those patched EXE files that keep getting bandied about, the ones that lamely again ask to insert the CD.

I got sick of all the different patches floating about (particularly that the No-CD crack and the XP patch were both shock2.exe files, meaning I couldn't use both at once), so I made my own using XVI32 - I've now got a v2.3 shock2.exe with the No-CD, XP, Multi-Processor and Texture Memory fixes applied, and it works fine (made a DromEd.exe with the Texture Memory and Multi-Processor fixes as well, otherwise Game Mode crashes for the same reasons shock2.exe does - the code changed by the XP patch doesn't exist in DromEd.exe so I can't add that). Both of these should be on eDonkey, provided my home PC hasn't crashed while I'm at work - try "System Shock 2 v2.3 EXE" and look for the one that says it has all those patches applied - ShockEd should be listed as something like "ShockEd with Multi-Processor and Texture Patches" . Oh, and I've put a "complete" version of Rebirth on there too - Beta 1 with old-style midwives and hybrid eyes, plus rumblers and ZB's v2 monkeys.
Sorry if any of this shouldn't be posted here - Clarification: I just have the patched shock2.exe itself available, not the full game (which I've had a legit copy of since the Xmas after it launched, however long ago that was - I know I first played it on a Voodoo 3 - CD-changing just annoys me), but I guess I can always knock up a version without the No-CD patch if this is still a problem.

Here's what I have tried to do to install this game:
1. Install normally (double-click on setup)
Effect:"C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.
After trying clicking 'Close' and 'Ignore', I came here and tried other methods.
To fix this just do a search for the file called "autoexec.nt" and copy it to C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32, then... you're set, very simple. :)

I am happy to write here that I got System Shock 2 working on my PC: Athlon 1700+: 387Mb PC3200: 9600 pro(with omega driver): XP Pro- SP2!
First I needed to fix that bug with 16-bit lame subsystem MS-DOS or somthing like that... ;)
Then I did just as Noah said on "24th july 2004, 06:40 PM" and it worked great! So Big thanks to him and to original poster, thank you, Thank You, THANK YOU!!! :D
I've also added that "safe texture manager". I can play the game Flawlesly, well for now, that is.
P.S. The exception is that I did the Full Install of the game instead of minimum like Noah! But I made a virtual Disc of System Shock 2...

Just for the record, I got it working with the HyperThreading fix, and safe_texture_manager :thumb:
Intel P4-3.4Ghz
XP Home/SP2
Radeon 9600

The game works even on xp sp2, with that texture manager line.
Had to try a lot of hocus-pocus that didn't improve the situation but the modification in the .cfg file did the trick.
