You guys are really helpful!
I hope so. Let us know if any of those worked! :)

I updated my drivers and turned off hyperthreading (I swore I turned it off when I first got the computer  ) and it works! Now I just got to get around that save crash thing!! :cheeky:

I think I may know what might fix you up. Try creating a folder called 'current', minus the quotes of course, in your SS2 directory. :thumb:

I've been haunted by the save game crashing bug as well; finally found a solution --- in an odd place.
The following package (available via bittorrent) which claims to be some kind of RIP->full CD upgrade contains also a fix for a save game crash. I didn't need or use any of that, just the "ss2 fix" contained in it. Here's a link to the package:
and here is the contents of the "ss2 fix.txt" readme:
"Use this file ONLY if you encounter any problems when saving your game. This file will recreate autosave from the beginning of the game, effectively overwriting your existing one. No other saves will be affected. Note, if your game crashes immediately after you enter the door to choose your career path, then you have save game problems and should apply this fix."
The fix is inside the "ss2 fix.exe" (mind the space in the name) file. Unfortunately, google can't seem to find a quick link to it on the net. The only source available right now seems to be the bittorrent link above. If anyone can host the file (it's only 155 kB) I'll mail it.
For me it works; I can now use ALT+S to quicksave, and also save from menus. Haven't gotten as far as the career-choosing-doors. Once had a game hang while saving from the menu, but after restarting ss2 the savegame turned out ok, so that's a mild problem.
I'm sorry, but you cannot post that URL here as the website carries links to pirated software, which is (

Well that's a shame, because I kind of need that save fix... :tsktsk:
Unless there's another way...

I'll try that TNT....
IT WORKED!!! All my woes are done for now, thank you! But I know where to go if I need help. :thumb:

With our powers combined...
Glad it all worked out in the end.. Be sure to share your thoughts and feelings as you play through the game for the first time :) Always a joy to read.
Enjoy!

Like a few people, friend of mine was getting the crash after picking your career choices. With some machines bringing up " appcompat " error. Couldnt find any posts on this thread at all on how to fix it.
So kept looking, and found somewhere it says to add directory called "current". It crashes because there is no where to autosave. So he made the directory, and it worked, most excellent.
How good are co-op games.

Co-op games are great if both people are on a similar level in terms of knowledge of the game. I'd also suggest making sure you have some means of voice communication whilst you play...
...if for no more reason than hearing their screams when a hybrid jumps out on them :D
TheNightTerror on 6/12/2004 at 09:57
Or to hear their screams when you shoot them from a distance with a shotgun, so they think a hybrid's after them. :ebil:
Too bad I never use ranged weapons anymore, not to mention I've never played a multiplayer game of any sort before.

You've really never played multi? :wot:
Wow.
You should do as soon as possible. I'd be more than happy to play with you. I could shoot you repeatedly whilst your melee weapons couldn't hurt me :D Uh..I mean.. We'd make a great team.. Uh..yeah..
Seriously though, you should hunt down some people and play multi.... it's the way forward :)
