hmm what exactly is the problem? Did you try the safe_texture_manager line in cam.cfg? I have a nVidia Ti4600 and have no problems. I heard that downgrading your detonator drivers can help... I don't have the latest drivers installed, I have the one that windows update installs (it is not very recent almost a year old) I'm not sure if there is any other fixes - check the FAQ if you haven't already.

I can install System Shock 2 no problem on Windows XP Home Edition but when I try to run it, all I get is a few, quick, blank screen and then I'm returned to the Desktop. Can anyone help me out

I have read every page of this FAQ and it my intial problem was solved back at page 4, but I now have a new problem that doesn't seem to be listed here.
My SS2 installed without a hitch, and I got to the main menu just fine, but after the load screen when starting a new game, it just stayed black.
This was fixed by the "safe_texture_manager" method.
I was overjoyed to see the tram station load, but after a few steps out of the tram the game seizes up. I originally thought that the loadspeaker voice was causing it, as it was looping during the first freeze, but I tried again. This time I stepped out far enough for the voice to activate, then stepped back into the tran. The voice ended and I ran/crawled/jumped all over the inside of the tram with no freeze, but I took a few steps out and the game seized up in the same place.
So it must not be the sound.
The third attempt I walked out but immediately went to the right, attempting to walk around the trouble spot. It still froze once I ventured a few feet from the door.
I have no idea what is causing this. I don't know if there are any other places that would cause this to happen to also, so I'm not gonna just "noclip" past it. I would greatly appreciate it if anyone else can help me with this. :)
EDIT: Here are my specs just in case.
Windows XP Pro (SP 1)
2.8 MHz Intel P4 HT (HT disabled)
1Ghz DDRAM
ATI RADEON X300 PCI-X
Realtek HD Motherboard sound.
(I have the audio codec installed)
I also get the save/autosave error.
EDIT (again):
I got all the way to the gravlift, but it froze. I guess it just freezes at random times (but only when I leave the tram, hmmmmmm).
Compatiblilty mode does NOT work.

Have you patched the game? I had a similar problem years ago with my first copy of the game, except it outright crashed when the loudspeaker voice started.
What are your sound settings? The second loudspeaker voice plays at the grav shafts, so there's still a chance it could be sound related. Although, I'm not totally sure. :erm:

Are you sure HT is properly disabled? It sounds very similar to the issues caused by that.. Might be worth double-checking it.
I presume all your other 3d games work fine (direct3d rather than opengl)?
I'm with TNT on the patching thing..
Have you tried reinstalling windows? I've just done one of my monthly reinstalls and it gets more fun every time, I swear! Or at least, bearable with a book in hand and an hour or two to spare.
The x300s are quite new cards also..might be worth trying to get updated drivers.. (4.12b are the absolute latest drivers though as they are beta, you may want a previous version).
Oh, I assume it's just a typo but it's 1 GB of ram, not 1 Ghz ;p
Er.. This is all probably of no use..but..enjoy!

Thanks, I'll try all of that except the driver (I CANNOT find any drives for X300's in Windows XP on the ATI site, it's so friggin' weird)
Aekeron on 23/11/2004 at 16:37
Hmm..don't the x300s come under the Radeon series of cards? Strange..
EDIT:
Here you go:

Note the that you should really have Service Pack 2 installed for these (though you might be able to get away with not bothering, I see little point to experiment considering you're already having problems) :)

Thanks, I 'll try all of them! You guys are really helpful!
