A ripped version of SS2 that's available from a well known site for classic games which is not to be named here, as SS2 is not abandonware (see sticky at the top of the forum). That version has the videos re-encoded with divx which is actually easy to do yourself. But maybe I should re-encode them* and put up a torrent on SBF. I'll see about that.
*Re-encode them with a windows default codec like mpeg-4 that is. Because I don't want another wave of n00bs who can't get their vids to work.
EDIT: I just had a look at the HOTU videos. They look terrible to be honest. I understand they wanted to reduce the filesize as much as possible. But I will go for better quality (while still reducing file size).

Well, my copy of SS2 installs fine, loads fine but as soon as I enter the training level and walk around for a while, it freezes :(

Sounds like you didn't apply the Dual Core / Hyperthreading fix.

I'll try that and see if it works.

Is not that I like vista very much, but Thief I, Thief II and System Shock 2 all work with affinity.exe and patched without the need for a modified exe.
However as a safeguard I did not tried system shock 2 without the safe texture manager line. And they all work in hardware mode.
The only real drama is the fact that you have multiple screen flashes when saving, loading or using the maps or objectives (in thief) unless you use 640 x 480 of video resolution, all three games do this. And this stresses my monitor and myself as well.
[edit]
And of course no videos, old codec and all, installed the codec but no dice, so I will have to re-encode them to something more recent.

That doesn't seem to be as easy as I thought. All my re-encoded videos crashed SS2 so far. I'm not sure what's the problem.
I had a look at the original videos as well as the HOTU ones (which work in a standard SS2 installation) in GSpot and couldn't make out any critical differences. The videos probably need to use the old AVI format 1.0 but that alone didn't solve the problem.
If you find out anything, it would be nice if you let me know.

No dice, Divx5.11 and .avi extension does nothing for the missing video.

Note that you still need to have LGVid.ax registered for SS2 to play any videos, regardless of format.

I couldn't get it work, registered the file just fine, but no chance to play a video inside the game.
I can get to work Garrett Loader, but without affinity.exe, so I have to use the old method of waiting for it to ask to insert the cd, so I can use task manager and set the affinity on CPU 0 (is just hyper threading, but is still a pain in the rear).
Forget it, that was with the fixed .exe files, I have to use the task manager with alt-tab before starting/loading a game.
