Hasn't anyone ever heard of Cedega?
Of course we have :) But it's commercial, non opensource and has a stupid name, so we geeks prefer Wine :D
It works on cedega btw. :)
Cedega itself is not commercial, but I see what you are getting at. You could simply pay $5 for a month of membership with Transgaming, and then cancel. The current version of Cedega will not need to be updated if you plan to play it with SS2.
The alternative is to use an earlier version of Wine that supports SS2 better. Don't use the latest version if it messes things up...

I have Cedega....I gave in because I got sick of beating my head over Steam.
I guess I will have to run it from there.

Any luck getting Shock 2 to work under the new(er) versions of WINE?
William Dojinn on 18/12/2007 at 15:16
Well if that works out you'll make many happy shockers, at least till the opendark project becomes useable. :)

er...hello? Anything to report on DX9.0c+Wine?
Hemebond on 9/2/2008 at 02:34
Okay, I've got System Shock 2 running on Ubuntu Linux under Wine 0.9.54. I'll also be creating a page on (
http://shock.plebmedia.co.nz/) my Wiki with instructions.
First of all, it's not necessary to install DirectX to play System Shock 2. I have had it working before without it. However following that tutorial will give you appropriate DLL overrides.
Anyway, if you follow my instructions on a (
http://shock.plebmedia.co.nz/Installation#Manual_Installation) manual installation and (using cmd.exe through Wine) then you just need to delete lgvid.ax and run
Code:
~$ cd .wine/drive_c/path/to/sshock2/
~/.wine/drive_c/path/to/sshock2$ wine shock2.exe
Issues so far are* poor performance; and* constantly visible cursorIt seems the container sprite rendering issue it used to have has been fixed.
Update: Argh! It's crashing on me now when trying to load medsci. I remember having this problem last time. Something to do with hybrids and allobjs.osm. I never found a fix.
