Install the game to another directory, then copy all the files and directories into the appropriate paths there, and make the paths relative. A period can be used to refer to the current directory, and two can be used to go down directories. So if you have \cdrom\data in there, point to ".\cdrom\data" or whatever.
Alternatively, remember that this is a DOS game, so it won't understand directories longer than 8 characters and/or with spaces. To get around that, truncate the directory names to the first 6 characters, ending with ~x, where x is a number, usually 1. You only need to change that number if there will be other directories that will end up with the same name.
Eg. "Program files" becomes progra~1
"game files" would become "gamefi~1"
"Program installers" would become "progra~2" (assuming Program files is in the same directory).
It'll make things easier though if you just install the game in C:\shock or something like that, to avoid problems with directory names.

I didn't know DOS games only supported 8 characters...:o
Writing '.data\cd' did the trick.
Thanks for the tips!

managed to get SS working last night. followed the instructions and it worked first time.
however, i did notice that i had to ensure that the original CD installation i unzipped to my hard drive remained in place.
I originally unzipped the CD download, and installed as per the instructions. naturally, i then deleted the folder that i extracted the CD to - only for the game then to refuse to start - it would do the 'black screen' then dump to desktop.
so, i had a look in the .cfg file in the SHOCK directory and it was pointing to the CD path that i had deleted. solution was to simply extract the CD again to this location and it worked perfectly again.
going to be playing it and SS2 tonight!
BTW - im running XPSP2 with all updates, A64 2.5ghz, 2gb ram, 7800gt with latest NV drivers and an audigy 4 with latest drivers.

You can move the CD anywhere you like and just rename the CD path in cyb.cfg, but it only supports a location line 8 characters long.
Here's what I did. My installation of SS1 is located in C:\Games\System Shock, and the CD data is in C:\Games\System Shock\Data\CD. So all I had to put into the CD path line was: .\Data\CD

Ive followed the instructions in the first posts, and ive managed to get to the title screen. The right hand side of the screen is cut off so I cannot see part of it all, I cannot see the intro movie, and the audio for the intro is intermittent. I also can't quit once ive gotten to the title screen. I have to ALT+TAB to the desktop and close it from there.
 Help???

But have you tried SS1 Portable? Maybe that won't have the same problems. It was specifically made to bypass all the manual tomfoolery needed to get SS1 working in XP.
