I did what you specified--no change. Also no change after upping the speed to 16 16.

Big thx for the FAQ - the game runs without a hitch now :cheeky:

Okay, it seems that running CDSHOCK.BAT rather than CDSHOCK.EXE fixes the problem. This is without VDMSound, which doesn't seem to do anything.
So the game works! Thanks so much.

I have a problem. SSchock ran perfectly until I upgraded my nforce chipset and graphics drivers.
Now I dont get the "com1" error anymore and the screen just stays black. Any idea how to fix that? I had that problem before with another pc and the only solution I found was to format the harddrive.
edit: SOLVED
System Shock doesnt like dual monitor setup. I went back to single monitor mode and it works. No videocapturing possible now though.

Hi, hopefully this topic is still active. I've been trying to get SS1 running on XP (SP2) with little luck. I remember getting it to run fine on my old XP system, though I can't remember how. I tried the steps in the first post but they did not help. Here is my dilemna.
I can only get the game running if I don't set up the sound in the install menu. If I do set it up, launching the game greets me with a black screen. If I don't, launching the game gives me a Com Port Error, but I can ignore this and start the game. However, there's clearly no sound. There are other problems. The game does not default to 640x480 (which I presumed it would with the command line in the CDSHOCK.bat), and when I change the res to 640x480 in-game the mouse goes very slow and unresponsive. If I remove the dos4gw.exe from the CDSHOCK.bat edit, the mouse goes extremely quick in the menu and fine in-game at 640x480, however it usually crashes before I get there.
I'm not using VDMSound at the moment as it seems to cause more harm than good in my experience, and didn't work when following the first post's instructions. Also, just in case I ever get it working, is it possible to change the diabolical controls?
Thanks in advance.

hi,
I have SS installed and running fine when its in any res below 640X400. If I change it to 640X400 or 640X480 all of the colors in the game change to pastel type colors.. sort of like looking at a photo negative without the black.
Anybody seen this before?

Ummm... I did exactly as in the FAQ but I have some problems. First of all when I ran the game trough VDM shortcut the sound in intro was choppy. So I tried going through the.bat file itself - sound is ok but the mouse just doesn't exist. the only way I can get mouse to work is by cdshock.exe but there is that slowdown in 640x480 T-T. Help!
Also - is there a way to re-bind keyboard commands? (stupid arrow-keys moving ><)

When I right click I have the run VDMS option but I don't have the one with the musical note. I got it to work without the dos4gw but after about a minute of playing it crashes to dos and I get 'Exception: 05 Error Code 0000' then a list of stuff that I'm not going to type up unless i have to. ;) I don't know if the error is caused cause i'm not using the dos4gw but I figured it wouldn't hurt to try it out. Or if someone knows how to fix it with out that program I'd work with that too.

I finally got the game to run multiple times. I had gotten it to run, but it only ran once per installation. After ignoring the COM thing, the game would cleanly crash to desktop. However, one problem I can't seem to fix is the mouse speed in 640x480. I went into CDSHOCK.exe and changed the 8's to bigger numbers, and the menu got alot more sensitive, but in the game, when I change it up to 640x480, it hasn't changed one bit. Anyone have any idea what's going on with that? I'd prefer not to have to change my mouse's acceleration.
Mouse = Some cheap standard Microsoft USB infared with a scrolly/clicky wheel.

Trying taking out moust2kv and the numbers that follow, but be sure to leave cdshock.exe. I had the same problem, although at one of the lower resolutions.
