Hi, everyone. I'm Desert. And I need some help with SS1. I've downloaded the SS1 version of the Underdogs. And I got this error:
Blah Blah Blah... Salt The Fries...
Error (I don't remember)
Not enough memory to make the Email Cursor-??
My PC is a PIII 500MHZ 128 RAM... WniME...
It sucks, yes, but whatever.
PLEASE HELP!! I NEED to play System Shock!
Thanks.

Ok so I did everything the FAQ said to do and I run the game I get this...
An error was encountered while attempting to load and display the Tip of the Day:
Last error reported by Windows:
0x0000007e - the specified module could not be found.
The initialization process will now continue.
After that I click back on the program on the taskbar and it continues. The game appears to play fine except for the fact that I can't run it properly in 640x400 or 640x480 it crashes when I move the mouse! Sometimes I can move the mouse very slowly across the screen but that doesn't seem to work for very long in 640x400 (or at all in 640x480) and the program just closes.
320x200 and 320x240 work just fine... kinda stinks but still playable. If anybody has any idea why this is happening and how to fix it, please help!

They should give ppl jobs to help ppl like us!
My problem, just like jakes.
System shock can no longer run due to a fatal error.
Error code 5001.
Execution error.
cannot run directly from cd. Run executable from hard drive.
Common problem solutions:
*Increase files in config.sys to 30 or more.
*disable SMARTDRV write caching.
*use a minimal config.sys and autoexec.bat.
I'm not entirly sure how to go about the solutions either!

all right...well i got my game to pretty much work. i still get the com2 error and i have no idea how to fix it or what it means  . the music still sounds weird and the game runs a bit slow but...i also get this weird problem. i'll be playing and it will just randomlly start spinning, or the player will start running like i'm holding down shift, but i'm not. i gotta restart the game to get it to stop...its really annoying. does anyone know how to fix that or the com2 error?

@CobbleNob, I'm assuming you're using the downloaded version of System Shock 1? You need to install it to a different directory than the one you downloaded it to.
@xlushuzdyme21x, as far as I know, there's no known solution to the COM2 error. About the eternal spinning problem, press the key that the game seems to think is being pressed again. For example, if you're turning to the right, press the right arrow key, if you're moving forward, press the forward key, etc. Sometimes it helps, but quite often for me, it doesn't. About the music and the game running funny, are you using VDMS sound?

Im afraid it isn't a downloaded version The Night Terror, it's a CD i got. should i install it in a diferent directory?

It would probably be the best thing to try. Were you trying to run SS1 directly from the CD, perhaps? I only assumed you downloaded it because I never heard of anyone having that problem with an actual CD copy of the game. :erm:

well different directory didnt work. maybe my cds just weird, then again my pcs old, but i thort so is the game so why should that matter! anywhoo, i think i was trying to run it directly from the cd, but isnt that what the cds for? didnt work doin it from the cd, so i'll try playin it without the cd. but dount that'll work.

Ah ha, there's your problem! You can't run SS1 directly from the CD, and that's why you got that error. ;) You'll need to run it using the .exe or .bat file you've got in your SS1 directory.
If you haven't already done a ton of work with it, and have the hard drive space for it, I'd copy the entire CD onto the hard drive, and reinstall it using your hard drive copy of the game. This way, the game will run faster. It won't need to go to the CD to load an e-mail, so if you get surprised with one, so to speak, you won't have time to prepare yourself for what may happen next.

trying the exe file doesn't work but the bat file sorta did, i got to see the intro but when i tried to play the game it didnt let me. maybe i should copy it onto the hard drive and intstall it from there. but hoe do i copy it onto the hard drive and install it from there?!?!
