@dethtoll : Glad you managed to fix your problem ! Weird... Is there any way to know which update was responsible for community's knowledge ?
nope. i did a full system revert, which took them all out at once. so i have no idea which one it is.

So I have a bizarre problem. I dled and extracted the dos4gw pack from the first page and all was well and dandy, until I tried to alter the 1_97 file. Whenever I try to rename it I get told that it's being used. Same with any copies I make. I have no idea what's using them, and it's getting frustrating.
It gets wierder though, if I highlight any of the other files (ie, click and drag from somewhere else and select one or more) I can delete those files, but if I select a group of files, and one has already been clicked on, I can't delete that file. It's like they become aware that they exist when I've given them explict attention, and refuse to be destroyed. On reboot this resets (files I couldn't delete before can now be deleted), so you'd think I get one altercation per reboot, but I still can't change the name of the file (to dos4gw) so it doesn't do me any good.
Thoughts people? This is screwing with my head.

Someone really needs to create a new topic with a lot of the new information, so people don't need to read through this massive thread. I can't do it, I've never needed to play on XP, so I don't know all that much on the subject.

See The Brain's link; also note that you don't have to rename it to DOS4GW.
For example:
Code:
MOUSE2KV.EXE 800 600 8 8 D4GW_197.EXE F:\GAMES\SSHOCKCD\CDROM\CDSHOCK.EXE > SHOCK.LOG

I offer from time to time to update the FAQ with information from this thread, links to updated utilities, etc; but I don't think XenivouS is still here. Certainly he's never replied.

Yeah, but I mean creating a new thread. You can always adapt his material and credit him, and link to the old thread.
What more can you do, under the circumstances? I don't doubt that XenivouS is long gone.

I followed the directions, and came up with this:
System Shock could no longer run due to a fatal error.
Error code 4002.
File error.
Could not find configuration file!
I had to take a screenshot to read what it said, as it disappears as quickly as it comes up.

Glorfindel: the message means that SS1 is unable to find the file it stores its sound and video configuration in, CYB.CFG. Please confirm the following:
- CYB.CFG exists in the directory you installed SS1 to (ie, the one with CDSHOCK.BAT in it)
- You are invoking SS1 via CDSHOCK.BAT
- The working directory (ie, the 'Start In' line of the corresponding shortcut) is the same directory CYB.CFG resides in
If it doesn't exist, make sure the directory is writable and re-run INSTALL.EXE in the installed directory (ie, not from the CD).

Thanks for your help, I figured it out!
