We arre getting there... I opened the game through the directory you mentioned (is there supposed to be sound during the title screen and the intro? I'm not sure... There's no sound on mine though) but again I could only get as far as the "New Game" screen. Once I hit start I got this error message:
"Our system has been shocked! But remember to salt the fries.
-Error code 3007
-Memory error
-Not enough memory to make email cursor.
I know I've seen this problem mentioned in this thread, so I feel like I'm getting warmer.

Oh yeah, we're getting much warmer. Let's see here . . .
1. For the sound -- you're supposed to have sound. You have to manually configure everything; find "install.exe" in C:\Sshock. Run it with VDMS sound, choose the language you want, then choose "Setup Sound System." For your music card, you probably won't get any luck with anything except General MIDI. You'll have to try each digital sound card to find one that works. Once you're properly configured, you should be in business.
2. For the memory stuff -- did you create the VDMS sound shortcut yet?

I played around with the sound stuff a bit. The only decent music I could get came from General MIDI, and I tried out most of the digital sound cards. Now there was sound on the title screen and the intro, but it was still pretty choppy. The graphics on the title screen are really ugly looking too... I'm not sure how to go about fixing the resolution, as there doesn't seem to be that option on the main menu.
I do have a VDMS sound shortcut also, yet my game still seems to crash when I try to get past the new game screen... Only when I try running it from the shortcut, I get no error message at all.

Choppy? VDMS sound should keep everything fairly even. :erm:

Yeah, you have to get in game before you can fix it up. You'll have to bear the ugliness. ;)

Hmmm. Okay, get the properties on CDSHOCK.exe, and max out all the memory settings. Did you remember to replace CDSHOCK.exe with Mok's modified version when you reinstalled?

Okay, I fooled around with the patch and it created a new shortcut. Using this, I am able to play the game. The digital sounds okay, and the music sounds better now, though I might turn it off, something I almost always did with System Shock 2 (more realistic experience that way). The mouse cursor seems to be very slow, but I suppose I'll get used to it. The interface is a little awkward sans mouse look, but DOOM didn't have mouse look back then either, so no big loss. I can see how this game can have a big learning curve... there's so many options and words on the screen and what not.
Thanks again, I'll keep my eyes open for any further problems.

You can do one of two things to fix that. You can open your mouse properties, and jack the acceleration there, or use Mouse2kv to jack the speed. If you can get the settings right, I'd go with the latter.

All righty, glad to hear you got it running. :thumb: Have fun, insect.

Well, 2 years late I finally sat down and followed this FAQ... and got the game running. Wahay!
One thing I've noted: is it just me or do humanoid mutants respawn faster than they used to on level 1? I'm sure they never used to come at me this often before. Although it has meant I walked off L1 with 45 med patches.
[edit] observation: the full screen map goes back to 320x200 so is very difficult to use with that mouse-speed app. Also the game crashes when I try leaving the map.

Hi there. I'm having some trouble with the FAQ's final steps.
1) Am I just supposed to drop Mok's xp patch named "cdshock_xp.rar" into the c:\sshock directory as is, or ... it seemed like it should be renamed cdshock.exe, but then how does it become an executable?
2) When I found the dos4gw download that included three versions of 1.97, I couldn't rename any copies of it to "dos4gw.exe"... it always complained that the file was in use by some other program, - I don't see how it can be... so what I'm trying so far is another "dos4gws" download that includes only 1.8, 1.92 and 1.95, and I'm starting by trying 1.8.
3) Ok, I'm good up until step 10, right-clicking on Mok's "cdshock.exe" (which is what makes me worry about that in 1))... mine is still "cdshock_xp.rar" and when I right-click it, there's no Memory Tab as called for in the FAQ.
Any help greatly appreciated.. haven't played the greatest game ever since like 1996.
Furthermore I can't delete any copies of the file "1_97" version of dos4gw for the same "already in use" reason. Ack!

You need winrar to extract the exe from cdshock_xp.rar.
