the game will work, move, and render, but crash if I move or click the mouse.
That almost sounds like a Mouse2KV issue. :erm: Are you using it?

I'm on windows XP, and my mouse is a USB optical mouse. I'm using the microsoft default mouse.
Have you tried updating the drivers for your mouse, maybe? I have a USB mouse also, but I can play SS1 just fine. Granted, I could play even without the proper drivers installed, but maybe it's worth a shot?

I'm trying to run SS1 on win98 SE. I can see the intro movie and the first menu, but after I try to start the game I get "not enough memory" message (code 3007). I tried Daxim's faq mentioned on this site, but I'm a DOS ignorant and can't quite understand it. Can anyone please help me get the game to run?
UPDATE: I got it to run :) I really AM stupid, forgot to try it out in pure DOS mode. Surprise, surprise, it works! I only needed to install mouse drivers for DOS...

It's been my experience that getting it work in windows is much less of a headache than getting it to work in DOS, but if it works for you, go for it.
The general procedure for getting around the memory issue in win32 is thus:
- right-click on CDSHOCK.BAT and select "Create Shortcut"
(A file should appear, CDSHOCK.PIF, described as "Shortcut to MS-DOS Program")
- right-click on CDSHOCK.PIF and select "Properties"
- select the "Memory" tab
- Change "MS-DOS Protected Mode (DPMI) Memory" from "Auto" to "16384"
- click "Ok"
- Run the game by double-clicking CDSHOCK.PIF
If that doesn't work, try increasing the other memory settings (EMS, XMS, Conventional, Initial) to maximum as well. This technique is only briefly (and confusingly) touched on by Daxim's FAQ, which discusses primarily getting it running in pure DOS via AUTOEXEC.BAT/CONFIG.SYS alteration.

It worked. Now I can run it under Windows. Thanks, ToxicFrog!
(The game is great, although I haven't got far. I'm still fighting the controls more than my foes :) Hope I'll get used to it.)

Just remember that you actually have four general control schemes to choose from - SZXC, keypad, arrows, and mouse-only. Of those I find SZXC the most natural, but whatever works for you...
It shouldn't take long for the controls to become second nature.

SXZC works best for me too so far... I'm only not sure what is best to use in cyberspace

I find myself using QWEASDZXC in C/space, so that I can keep my right hand on the mouse, but if you're willing to forsake mouse control the numberpad also works well (and is typically what I use in areas where I don't expect combat).

Too bad : FRAPS seems to make SS1 crash...
Anyway, just to help those with still some problems whti SS1 on their machine I managed to install SS1 on two different machines :
- AMD 64 3500+, ATi 9800XT, XP Pro SP2, mouse and keyboard on USB ports - works like a charm !
- Intel P4 3GHz, ATi X300 PCI-E, XP Pro SP2, mouse and keyboard on USB ports - almost works by ignoring the errors it gives me (COM1 & COM2...)
Maybe the COMx problem is from Intel's specific instructions chipsets... What do you think ?
ToxicFrog on 27/10/2005 at 15:04
It doesn't seem to be an Intel specific thing; it's caused by DOS/4GW scanning the serial ports when it starts up, but I don't know why some systems report an error on that and others don't. It doesn't affect the game itself.
If you're trying to capture gameplay movies, your best bet is to connect one of your video card's outputs to a capture card - I find that S-VIDEO out -> RCA composite in works well. Of course there's a performance hit because it's doing all those writes to the hard drive.

Ok, thanks for the info... Just one last question : Does anyone has ,like me, all sounds and MIDI working except for audio logs ?
It's weird, I configure the Cyb.cfg to point the "cd_data_dir_path" to the dir on the CD (I have the french original), or a local copy of this dir on my hard drive, none of this works...
