if i uncheck "close dos window on exit", i'm left with a dos window saying...

Check your SS1 .bat file. It sounds like it's trying to load Mouse2kv, but there's a problem. Can you copy and paste the contents of your SS1 .bat file in here, maybe?

@echo off
C:\sshock\nolfb.exe
C:\sshock\MOUSE2KV.EXE 640 480 8 8 C:\Games\SSHOCK\dos4gw.exe cdshock.exe
ok... i notcied that the dos4gw was being pointed to the wrong place, so i changed it to
@echo off
C:\sshock\nolfb.exe
C:\sshock\MOUSE2KV.EXE 640 480 8 8 C:\SSHOCK\dos4gw.exe cdshock.exe
now i get a window, entitled "16 bit MS-DOS Subsystem

the options are Close, and Ignore.
hitting ignore just brings up a blank screen.

Try setting FILES=30 in config.sys.
Common problem solutions:
*Increase FILES in config.sys to 30 or more.
*Disable SmARTDRV write caching
*Use a minimal config.sys and autoexec.bat
If none of these work, call Origin Tech Support.

I couldn't find a config.sys file in my SSHOCK directory, though!

I'm having some major problems with the sound. Whenever I listen to a log, the voice constantly skips and jumps around a lot. I'm pretty sure the music is doing it too, because it sounds very disjointed. Also, what's up with that ear-bleeding sound effect that plays at the very beginning of the game and every few minutes afterwards?

joel: I had the same problem, and this is what worked for me.
If you're using VDMS, right-click on your CDSHOCK shortcut, then Properties>Advanced. Hit the Performance tab, then check 'Try to reduce CPU usage' and move the slider below it to the left, to low. Hope that helped.
Now for another little problem of my own. SS1 works perfectly for me, aside from the fact that a few minutes after starting it up, and starting a new game, my computer will hang, frozen in SS1, and I have to hit the reset button. I'm running WinXP. How do I fix it this?
Someone mentioned earlier in the thread, as a response to someone with the same problem, that this is a dos4gw issue. Do I need a different version? If so, could someone please post a link to a version that isn't 1.97.
Please help! So..close..to playing...

Config.sys and Autoexec.bat are files used by old DOS based systems to load drivers and execute commands and such at startup. They have little to no relevance to NT based systems like XP. The default place to look for them on DOS based systems is in the root of C drive. They are there on NT based systems, but most likely for legacy support reasons, and are usually empty.

I really hope this hasn't been asked before (I checked, but didn't see anything...), but I saw someone post about it earlier on page...4? And it wasn't answered because the guy had gotten it fixed just by unin/reinstalling. It's not working for me.
I'm having this thing where I can play the game pretty normally, beat up hybrids for a li'l while, pick up stuff on the ground...but if I try to left click on something in my inventory, I wrenchattack/cryokinesis at it. Meaning I can't put the battery in the thingy to get through the door.
I've installed V2.3, but to get the game to work I have to run it in '98 compatibility and with one processor of the two I seem to have turned off. That's workin', so it's not an issue. Oh, and I tried turning display modes off (it was a solution to another problem) but no dice. Anyone else encountered this?

Wrong thread. ;)
Shiri on 8/9/2005 at 02:20
D'oh. I thought it could have been an XP compatibility problem given my issues with it beforehand...
*squints around for the right thread*
EDIT: Hmm, I can't find the right one. I can make my own without being crucified, right? >_>
