Ok..
Game worked last night.
Now, when I try to start or load a game, it promtply restarts without the mouse cusor visible.
If I attempt to load or start a game a second time, I am booted to desktop.

Well, I managed to get the game running. Music's smooth, got 640x480 res, all works like a charm. I played for a while, sometimes a minute, sometimes a few seconds... then pop, I get the Salt the Fries error. General Protection Fault, blahblahblah.
If there was a solution to this in the 9 pages of previous posts, I probably didn't notice, but like I said... 9 pages... that's a s***load to look through... Sorry if anyone have to repeat their solution.
EDIT: Looks like no one got the General Protection Fault thing.
I'm really eager to try out this game; after playing SS2, I figured I should check out the first. It's my first time.

Don't have time for details now, but that sounds like the dos4gw problem discussed in the last few pages. You need to furnish it with a better version of dos4gw.

i get the com2 error (and if i try to start the game again while the first window is still minimized, it displays a com1 error each time you try and start it again). i just click ignore and it runs fine. it crashed the first time i switched to 640x480, but hasn't crashed since.
the only problem i have is that the music sometimes runs at regular speed (i assume it's regular speed, this is my first time to play. but it sounds right), and sometimes it runs really, really fast, and sometimes in between. it seems like a lot of the times the music starts speeding up (but not everytime, i think) the rest of the game starts going really fast along with it (movement speed, enemies movement, etc). the voice files still play at the same rate (which makes sense).
i have the latest version of vdmsound. should i try reconfiguring my sound card? it's just integrated with my processor, but i have one of the soundblasters selected, because it's the only one that worked (used auto set up with it).
on a side note, in case it's related, when running the initial install, i used the first soundcard (just "soundblaster") and it played the music and the digital audio, but in game it played all sounds except for audio. so i went back to setup and tested it, and no sounds worked at all. so then i changed cards and all was well (except for the random speeding up of the music (and game along with it).

Hmmm. What programs have you got running in the background? It could be that something is doing something that's briefly sucking up a lot of resources, and it's slowing down the game. For example, Norton Antivirus searching for updated virus definitions could easily do that, on my computer, it uses up enough resources for my games to be unplayable until it's done.
Another possibility is that you were lucky enough to get a CD copy of the game, and installed SS1 from the CD. If you did, I strongly recommend you copy all of the game files off the CD, then install it from your hard drive. The CD stops spinning unless the game actually needs to load a digital file, which is one of the voice files, and that caused a major lock-up on my computer.

I don't have anything running it the background that would use more than 2% or so of system resources, so i know that isn't the case. and yes, i used to have that problem with norton as well. now i just update manually (usually) while i'm away.
and yes, i got a cd copy of the game. but it was a downloaded .iso file from an abandonware site. i installed the version that said "with terminal access" with a virtual drive program. i don't know what the terminal access part means though.
o and i forgot to give specs, just in case it makes a difference.
winxp home sp2
athlon 64 3300+
512mb ram
x800 pro video card (i can't imagine how this would affect the game since it doesn't use 3d acceleration, but i've have had problems with new cards and computers running old games before *cough* ss2 *cough* :weird: ).
onboard audio (don't know what kind of mobo, came with the hp system).

i also have another minor concern, while i'm at it. i opened a door (it's near the beginning of the game) and now it continually opens and closes, for ever and all eternity, even if i load a savegame from before i opened. :weird: when i get to it, it's already opening and closing. :grr: and i've tried closing the game and opening again. haven't tried a new game yet though, and have restart the comp. not a big deal, just weird.

Don't worry, that door on Medical deck is supposed to open and close all the time, it's part of the game.

o, haha. but it wasn't opening and closing before the first time i opened it. o well.

Little help getting my SS1 to run? I'm running the enhanced CD version, sound works fine, but the music is kind of choppy. Any way to fix that?
