@Daxim: I could have sworn that the SS1 hang-on-exit workaround was in your FAQ, but it doesn't appear to be, and it really should be.
I don't know what this is about, I just read the post and thought I'd mention that Daxim has been banned a few months ago and probably won't read this.

So much work for an ancient game, but well worth it.
All the FAQ procedures just lead to a CTD when starting a new game. :tsktsk: I got SS1 to run decently with just the cdshock.exe and VDMSSound.
P4 3.2 GHz
1G RAM
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 900 (built-in, so shyaddup about it)
SoundBlaster (built-in)
WinXP SP2
Vid Modes 320x240 and 320x400 run the mouse just fine. 640x480 is the snail-mouse. 320x400 runs better graphics than the lower, but not quite as sharp as the higher. I can live with the mid-range resolution.
I still get the COM2 error, but that appears to be irrelevant. Just Ignore and go back into the VDMS/Dos/SS1 window.
Sounds and music run just fine as do cutscenes. All I have to do is see how well it does running long-term.
EDIT: And all is good :thumb:

Ok.. I followed the instructions straight to the end and when I was done, the new cdshock and the original sshock.bat didn't work.. So I used the cdshock.exe and it worked pretty well except for the music.. And I'mpretty jumpy and was learning the controls (they aren't hard) when a cyborg yelled very loudly.. Got to fix the sound. :cheeky:

Are you running CDSHOCK.bat with VDMS sound? It should help smooth out the sound a little. But, I always have to turn the digital sound from SS1's audio menu waaaaaay down. Otherwise, it's deafeningly loud.

Oh, I'll try that. I fixed the music by simply using general midi and that's about it.. I'll watch for any errors. :thumb:

Sgt_BFG's shortened tutorial to get CDSHOCK working on XP
set your sound to: Soundblaster
Music to: General Midi
install, download the XP .exe for SSHOCK CD version and the game will run fine!

It's pretty hard fighting SHODAN.. Kind of a rip off when you die lol :bored: ... once, when SShock didn't work, I was able to go to the menu only.. I had a different music choice and it sounded different.. (The menu music). I wish i could use soundblaster for music. Oh, and are there any ways to uhhh... "edit" it? Becase once I win, it'd be cool to change traits and stuff... :ebil:

I can not rename the the 1_97 file to dos4gw, it won't let me, it says "close any programs that are using it and try again even when nothing is using it.

Make a copy of the 1_97 file and try renaming the copy to dos4gw.

I tried that.
