Yup. Nothing else.

Hi, got it to work, although when I go in one direction a little way, it gets stuck and I can't change that direction.
Someone else has mentioned that they spin to the right; it happens to me in any direction, including forwards. Clicking in that direction again doesn't work.
What should I do?
Thanks for the FAQ be the way

@ TheDorkProject and Turricaned: a bit late perahaps, but maybe you'll check the thread again one day - you can strafe. If you're using the numberpad, it's 1 and 3; if you're using the letters, it's SZXC to move, AD to turn, and QWE to lean. I find this much easier as it puts all the other useful keys (switchweapon, run, look, crouch/prone, and the numberkeys) close at hand and also leaves the numberpad free for typing in codes.
You know, I've seen so many people wandering around who don't seem to realize that SS1 doesn't only use the numberpad that I'm tempted to write up and post a list of keyboard controls.
@ Daza400: first of all, does it give you this error in a windows popup, or in the DOS window?
Secondly, if you're running install again to set up sound/music after installing, you should be running INSTALL.EXE from the SShock install dir, not INITIAL.EXE from INST/ on the CD.
And now, my own troubles...I got it working eventually, and perhaps someone else will find these records helpful.
Upthread, I mentioned that I set up a pure DOS box, but it wasn't fast enough.
Good news: it's been upgraded.
Not-good news: it's no longer running DOS, and won't for the forseeable future.
So, I once again set about getting it working on 2k.
At first, it had no sound and errored out with a 3007 on start. VDMS and SHOCKXP fixed this.
Then, the mouse was trapped in the upper left corner while in 640x480. Cue MOUSE2KV.
There was briefly a problem where it GPFd while loading savegames, but it doesn't do that any more...although I have no idea how I fixed it.
Turning on "basic VESA support" in VDMS fixes the problem where 640x480 consists of the upper left corner scaled to fullscreen.
So at this point, it looks like the game is running fine...until it hangs a minute or two in.
I reproduce this a few times. No pattern other than that it tends to happen between 2-4 minutes after game start. However, the last line in the VDMS log is always "MPU-401 reset". I disable MPU-401 emulation and turn off MIDI using install.exe.
This doesn't help, so I try turning off sound (in VDMS and INSTALL) and Adlib (in VDMS). Now, rather than hanging, it simply CTDs with the windows "error" sound - no error message, and no DOS window left behind either.
If I turn on the CLI/POPF workaround (which I shouldn't need - it's a 2k machine), it seems to take longer on average before it breaks, but it's back to hanging rather than CTDing.
Finally, in desperation, I re-enable dos/4gw 1.97.2...and it works.
*dances*
Well, I spoke too soon. It doesn't work. On the plus side, it crashes every 20-30 minutes rather than every 2-4, and it's a clean CTD (no matter what the settings are!) rather than a hang.
Ideas?

I've just been playing about with SS1 in DosBox 0.61.
First off, for anyone who didn't know, it runs fine straight from installation, albeit a bit sluggishly.
Second, DosBox reports that SS1 attempts to write various bytes to
'modem' on startup - which would explain the COM1 warnings that people get. It's been years since I played around with the com ports, does anyone know what the following sequence does:
address .. data
0xd ....... 0x60
0xe ....... 0x0
0xd ....... 0x60
0xe ....... 0x33

I decided to try to get SS1 on XP as well as win 98,
but I can't find any of the files on that faq at the start of this post.
Someone should had at least built a patch to get SS1 working on Win 98.
GRASS!

Can someone please help??? I've been through all 8 pages of this thread and can't find anything... I have windows XP pro with my original disk version of system shock.
After much tweaking - Everything works fine, but when i start the game, I can play for about 20 seconds, then it crashes to desktop. :(
No matter what I do, and I have tried everything, it always does this.
Anyone have any ideas please??
Great forum by the way.

:erm: Do you mean the floppy disk version of the game? I haven't heard a peep about anyone managing to get it running properly under XP, I tried a while back so I could hear what Shodan originally sounded like, but had no luck. Your best bet would probably be to download the CD version of the game and to get that running.
Curious that it runs, at all, though. Have you tried shutting down all the programs that don't need to be running, and maxing out the memory settings for SSHOCK.exe? (I think that's the name of the floppy disk .exe file. ) Also, open Task Manager, and find "ntvdm.exe", right click on it, and try setting the priority to AboveNormal. Any higher than that makes System Shock 1 very unhappy.
Good luck! :thumb:
