Ah ha, there's your problem! You can't run SS1 directly from the CD, and that's why you got that error. ;) You'll need to run it using the .exe or .bat file you've got in your SS1 directory.
If you haven't already done a ton of work with it, and have the hard drive space for it, I'd copy the entire CD onto the hard drive, and reinstall it using your hard drive copy of the game. This way, the game will run faster. It won't need to go to the CD to load an e-mail, so if you get surprised with one, so to speak, you won't have time to prepare yourself for what may happen next.

trying the exe file doesn't work but the bat file sorta did, i got to see the intro but when i tried to play the game it didnt let me. maybe i should copy it onto the hard drive and intstall it from there. but hoe do i copy it onto the hard drive and install it from there?!?!

Well, the game's old enough that it's pretty simply. Just copy all the files on the CD and copy them to a folder on your hard drive. :cheeky: As for not being able to see anything but the intro, did you remember to change the memory settings on the new .exe file? (And you do have it, right? You can't run SS1 on Windows XP without it.)

i'm not windows xp i'm windows 98, but i'll try that yeah.

wait, also. how do you change the memory settings on the exe file? speaking of the exe file i seem to have lost it and now only have the bat files! Also went and copied all the files on the cd, but for some reason it wont let me paste them into the hard drive. i never new i was this pantz at computers!

wait soory, found the exe files but being the noob i am, do not have the foggiest on how to change the memory settings on it. dam me and my and my lack of initiative and common sense!

Oh, you're trying to get it running on Windows 98? I have no idea if you'd be able to change the memory settings the same way as with XP, but maybe using the Windows 2000/XP .exe file isn't the best idea, so I'd just use the regular one. Have you tried running the game in pure DOS?
CobbleNob on 10/12/2004 at 01:06
i've thought of trying that, but to be frank. i don't know how to get into dos to try it or what to type once im there. please don't say i've been a complete novice and bought a game that doesnt work on windows 98.

I decided to pull my copy of SS1 out again and try it out. I tried to run the install and it comes up an error, no surprise. So I read this guide, did everything it said. But when I tried to run the install again, it still didn't work.
The error is Cannot execute initial.exe.
I'm running Windows XP Pro, no service packs.
