No matter what I do, I always get this error-
System Shock can no longer run due to a fatal error.
Error code 5001
Execution error
Cannot run directly from CD. Run executable from hard drive.
I'm using the Underdog's CD version. I used Xenvious's SS1 on XP faq, but I just can't get by this error. I installed it with initial.exe in my c:\SystemShock\INST directory to the C:\SystemShock\ directory. I run the C:\SystemShock\CDROM\CDSHOCK.EXE and it pops up a window that gives me this error. I make a batch file that pauses it after it opens it, and I get to see this error. I make a batch file that runs it with MOUSE2KV and DOS4GW and it still doesn't work. I run it with VDMSound and it still doesn't work.
Does anyone have any ideas? I really want to try this game. Please!
Thanks in advance for any help you guys can offer.

Hi! Is there any possibility to reassign keys in SS1 ? Or I must learn all this binds?
P.s. is there mouse look? Or any possibility to turn it on?

Nope. (to alex)
By the way, I got it installed on XP. For those of you who made the same stupid mistake I did, you can't install the game to the same folder as the install files you downloaded. That's why it wasn't working for me. You also can not delete the directory with the install files, because they contain the executable. The game directory just has a batch file that runs the exe.
When I installed it, the walls seemed to bend as I approached them. I was able to fix this by changing the level of detail, then changing it back to max. Strange...

Hello There !
I tried to follow step by step, but there is a small stupid problem i have with the dos4gw files. I can't rename them or even delete it because my tincan claims some other prog is using the file, which is impossible?! or not?
I feel stupid :p
Any help would be appreciated...

There is no way to rebind the keys.
There is no mouselook. You can change posture, and the up/down angle. The control style lets you shoot anywhere in the main screen area, with out having to look straight at the spot.

A big thank you to all those who have contributed to this thread - I am now experiencing System Shock on XP, with sound and in 640 x 480 on my LG Flatscreen. Absolute joy - never thought i'd see the day! I didnt have to run thru the VDMSound shortcut either, CDSHOCK works jus' fine :-)
This is going to be good.....only ever played the original Shock a couple of times on my old P3 300Mhz....all the logs im going to hear!!! Wooohooo!!!
Cheers all
AK
PS I am waiting for some one to give me a mini flaming for not doing this earlier and playing SS1, yes I know ive been on the forums for ages!!! :p

I know exactly what you're talking about, and I have no idea what causes it.
Whenever I've had to deal with these files I can't delete, erase, or move, all I've had to do was kill Explorer in the task manager, then open a command prompt and go to the directory where the offending file was to delete it that way. You can also rename these files this way.
The dos4gw file I used for System Shock is located (
http://unease.illogic.net/dos4gw.zip) here with the proper filename if anyone wants it.

Ok, I managed to make SS1 work with XP ! I wish to thank all of the people involved in this FAQ...
I'm surprised the GFX aren't so bad for a 12 years old game : rich and animated textures, dynamical music, smooth animation, GUI full-customizable... I've beaten up the game 3 times by the past, I had most of my best game experiences with SS1, but I rediscover the beauty of this masterpiece...
Just one wish : improve the quality of the MIDI musics, somewhat "blip-bloppy" even with my Terratec Aureon UNVERSE. I think it's due to the limitation of VDMsound, isn't it? Do someone have an idea ?
Off-Topic wish : System Shock 1 remake with Doom3 engine !

Check out the properties on the VDMS shortcut you're using to run the game. Under the VDMS tab, look for 'midi emulation,' which should be checked. Below that is the option I used to make the music sound much, much different. Some's better, (Reactor level music makes my subwoofer rumble even more than usual) while some is worse, (elevator music, all cyberspace music . . . ) but that's just my opinion. You may like all the different sounding versions of the music. :)

Can I contribute my €0.02? I've made this game work in Win2k, thanks to the FAQ, but all is not perfect (it never is, isn't it?). When I start up the game, it switches back to Windows complaining about the program naughtily sniffing at COM1. And then COM2. It is then quiet, thank you very much, but then my monitor complains the signal is out of range. So I press Esc a few times to make the game skip the splash screens, and when the music starts, I press Enter. Incidentally, this triggers the intro sequence, which happens in different screen mode, so the picture comes back. After that, I am back in 320x240, and I can select a new game or load a saved one.
At this point, the game would sometimes start up and crash shortly. I suspect the reason for the crash is that the mouse cursor is somewhere out of the 320x240 screen (thanks to mouse2kv), so I am always careful to keep the mouse cursor in the top left corner until I can switch to 640x480. After that it appears the game runs nicely.
I hope this helps some folks out there.
