Also...I tried updating using the shkpatch...but I got a error: Wrong version..."Cannot patch this version of the game. This patch expects version 1.15 to be the installed version. The version currently installed is 2.3" ???

Hi All,
I'm trying to get SS1 running in XP SP1. I have a GF2 MX400 and an SB Live! Value. The game seems to start as it should, but I am dumped to desktop. The VDMS MSDOS window is still running. If I click on it, I can sometimes see the intro screen before I am dumped back to the desktop. After several tries, it finally crashed out. No error. The VDMS.LOG is full of things like:
@W - 11:51:06.667 - SBController
HandleTransfer: DMA updates too infrequent (unable to keep up with
desired transfer rate), requesting boost
@I - 11:51:06.674 - SBController
HandleAfterTransfer: Interrupting (8-bit, x1) after 2368ms, 96 bytes
(terminal count)
which tells me it's a soundcard problem. Any ideas on fixes tho?
Edit: Found the problem
Of all the silliness on my part. *sigh* I had mIRC running as well, so if someone left a message, and the taskbar started to flash, I was booted out to the desktop. I also changed a few settings on the soundcard, and while the errors remain, the game is still playable. Working on eliminating the chattering by playing with the buffers.
Edit2: How does one change the resolution and the gamma in the game? I can find no setting for it, nor a menu for it in the manual.

i been following this faq for the whole day and i still can't get system shock to work on windows xp. i don't know what i'm doing wrong, i followed all the steps and downloaded all the required programs correctly. but it still won't work! when i open my cdshock.bat file as a notepad, it comes up with:
@echo off
D:\cdrom\cdshock.exe
when on the faq it is supposed to look like:
@echo off
E:\Games\sshock\nolfb.exe
E:\Games\sshock\MOUSE2KV.EXE 640 480 8 8 E:\Games\SSHOCK\dos4gw.exe cdshock.exe
how do i get it to change? do i have to manually go and type all that or is it supposed to change automatically? if so, how? i thought i extracted all the programs right. when you extract the programs, are you supposed to extract them to the system shock main directory? :confused: i also have another problem. when i click the cdshock vdmsound shortcut to play the game, it comes up with this box and says:
VDMS Launchpad - CDSHOCK
The system cannot open COM2 port requested by the application. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.
when i chose close, it exits. if i chose ignore, it goes to the main screen of the game but the music is all messed up. it lets me pick the difficulty and then when i go to play it exits out. i think it flahes the "don't salt the fries" message but its not up there long enough to see. i don't know what to do! please help, i love this game and i haven't played it in so long and i'm soo stuck and confused. :confused: but otherwise the faq is very good :thumb:

Copy/Paste the changes over the old lines in the batch file. Change the drives and path names to be correct for how you have set things up on your system.

i have done everything that i am supposed to, but now when i run it i get THIS error:
>>DOS/4GW fatal error (1007): can't find file C:\SSHOCK\CDSHOCK.EXE
to load<<
but the file is right in the directory with the rest of the files!!! where i tell the program to be because here is my cdshock.bat
>>c:\sshock\mouse2kv.exe 640 480 8 8 c:\sshock\dos4gw.exe c:\sshock\cdshock.exe<<
i can NOT figure this one out!!

Finally got this thing working even though I've owned it for years. Played SS 2 several times so always wanted to try this. Absinthetic, if you're still stuck, you're batch file isn't set right. You don't have dos4gw pointed correctly. Remove the c:\sshock\ in front of the cdshock.exe.
Huge thanks to Xenivous for putting this together and also to ethered for helping me put the final piece together when this walkthrough didn't quite work for me (I was getting the crashes with the unsalted fries message... ethered mentioned he just ran it with the modified batch file only... without using VDMSound - might want to try it if you're stuck with this also)

;) I think you meant to click on the SS2 FAQ. But, I'm not sure why that would happen, what version is the game now?
David on 17/10/2004 at 12:47
2.3 is the patched version.

Thanks so much for this guide :)
With a little tweaking of my own, I've been able to get the game running almost perfectly, with only little hiccups during the intro cutscene.

I've actually been playing with the Roland music (mt2gm.map) lately, and I kinda dig it over the General Midi stuff...
Anyways, I took some screens (with dosbox which is totally unplayable, heh) just for kicks...
