You managed to get all the programs working right? You got farther than I ever got, I gave up and only ran SS1 with the hacked .exe file, VDMS sound, and nothing more. I can't think of much to suggest right now, except maybe you should try removing entries from the .bat file, maybe one of the programs you're using to try to make SS1 work is making it rather cranky. Back up the original of course, and try taking out seperate lines one at a time. But don't worry, I have an optical USB mouse too, and other than the cursor being rather slow at 640x480, which can always be remedied by jacking the cursor acceleration, everything runs perfectly.

I have got my budget CD version of SS to work flawlessly except one little thing the cursor moves very slow, you said in the previous post you can accelerate it how do I do that?
Cheers :thumb:

The way I do it is through the control panel. If you open it, click on 'printers and other hardware', then click on 'mouse,' you'll be able to change your mouse settings. (I play SS1 quite a bit, so I just put a shortcut to the mouse settings icon on my desktop so it's easy to find when I need it.) Under the 'motion' tab, there should be some kind of acceleration setting. It probably depends on the type of mouse and type of drivers you have, but if you max it out, you should hopefully be okay. The mouse will be incredibly sensitive and hard to control in Windows, but once you get in game and you're in 640x480, you'll be just fine. :thumb:

This is REALLY F*****G ME OFF
Ive installed all the bits and bobs fine, and done everything.
But i have NO cdshock.exe file. where is it???? i need it to do the last bit of the process (step 10)!
The xp patch is there, but its a "rar" file.
the only cdshock file in the main directory is "Cdshock" - which is an MS-DOS batch file. Is this it??
i clicked on this and it went to the intro, menu and the startup screen (the one where you set the difficulty settings and puzzle settings etc). when i click start everything quits to windows. And no explination either.
i have the CD version of the game.
thanks,
Tim

*.rar is a compression format just like *.zip. I won't provide a link to the app because it's 1.20am and I'm tired but it's quite easy to find. And take this as a somewhat sweetened version of STFW, because it's not that difficult to find out.
oh, welcome :)

I'll pick up where averroes left off. :) You'll need WinRar to extract the file for you, get it here:
(
http://www.rarlab.com/)
I ran into the exact same problem when I first tried to get SS1 working on my computer, so don't feel bad. :)

I have done everything, it works but....
1)why does the speed vary (music speed up and slow down)
2)why does switching to 640x400 or 640x480 crash the games - it works and changes resolution but the ntvdm fails?

i have done everything that i am supposed to, but now when i run it i get THIS error:
>>DOS/4GW fatal error (1007): can't find file C:\SSHOCK\CDSHOCK.EXE
to load<<
but the file is right in the directory with the rest of the files!!! where i tell the program to be because here is my cdshock.bat
>>c:\sshock\mouse2kv.exe 640 480 8 8 c:\sshock\dos4gw.exe c:\sshock\cdshock.exe<<
i can NOT figure this one out!!
