I recently read a post by uncadonego in "Thief Fan Missions Forum- What do you dislike in a mission?"
He said:
.....If people make an octagonal building and then use a square room brush, the whole stealth and hearing concept of Thief goes to pot. I HATE THAT! I want the sounds to be right.
I think he is absolutely right, but.....how to roombrush an octagonal building?
I have two octagonal towers in my level and guards who are patrolling the outside and they hear every noise which is made inside the towers, but how to avoid it? :(
Is there a way to make an octagonal roombrush?
Thank you :)

Very Carefully :)
I'd use one rectangle brush to go across the middle of the octogon. Then smaller rectangles on each side of that to fill in, you might even have to add some more small ones,
A very boring and slow process but it will make the sounds better.
One thing you might want to do is make the walls for the octogon 4 feet thick istead of two. It won't be perfect to scale, but if you don't have any windows that go all the way through the walls it'll be ok, you could fudge outside doors with a door frame.
Its a comprimise if you try to make all your wall 2 feet thick but it'll give you more room for error in the room dept. I'd rather see a few thick walls than hear someone (or them hear me) on the other side of a wall.

I think I did the octagonal lobby in Eastwater Bank using 9 room brushes, much in the way Schwaa suggested.... eight aroudn the perimeter, rotated as needed (keeping one side parallel to the side of the octagon it's flush against). I then put one in the middle to cover what the eight missed. The trick of course is to make sure no RB's center is inside another RB.

That's pretty smooth way to do it uncadonego , I have been rotating all my eight sides pyramids 22.5 degrees so I get four flat sides though. Not for room brushing per se, but because I've noticed Ai's (and even Garrett) have a hard time walking into the points. I've believe this caused SHAS (don't know what it stands for [Eidos forum] but its the instant death syndrom when Garrett just screams and dies for no apparent reason) in Crom's Blade numerous times.

If you want some really fun roombrushing experiences, try roombrushing an octagonal hallway curving around an octagonal room. (I swear I will never do THAT again!:tsktsk: )
I really wish we had a wedge option for room brushes. It would make things so much simpler (although I am sure there is some perfectly valid reason why that can not be . . . sigh:( I love dromed, but love sure does hurt sometimes!)

Thanks for the graphic, uncadonego. That's exactly what I was trying to describe.
It works fine for larger rooms.... but of course the lobby in EWB is small, which leads to the problem that with all those RB's in a small room, you can't hear the guard's footsteps (on marble) when he's on the other side of the room (which is like 16 feet away). I don't think there's really any way around this side-effect unless you can use the thicker walls like Schwaa mentioned.

Try roombrushing a 3-sided prism. It's impossible i think. :(
It's a real bitch when you want to have fog only outside and then you have a building with a sloped roof, because it can't be done without it screwing up. That's always been my main problem with roombrushing...
Why couldn't they make it so roombrushes could take any form a terrain brush can? i don't understand that...it'd make things so much easier.

It's because terrain brushes are all melded into one great shape when you compile a mission, the ones you see as wireframes in dromed are just the data dromed needs to build the real terrain. And roombrushes are not melded into one since they have to separate different areas with different settings, else you wold probably not need roombrushes.
