As for making the old levels, there really isn't a damn thing Eidos can do about it, if it's just individuals lovingly recreating their favoutire thief level. If it was a concerted effort to remake the entire game by an organised group, that could well run into trouble.
You might reconsider speaking of that which you do not know about. That said, I agree with your sentiment, and I wouldn't worry about "re-envisioning" some classic Thief missions, but I think they would be much better made from scratch.

couldnt you do as the rom sites do and host files saying "This is an exact brush copy from the original thief1/2 - it is illegal for you to download the file if you do not own the original game" ?
As to obj export - I believe you can now d/l the ut2k4 ued (tho not certain)- i dunno if it would work but u may be able to d/l it and use it just for import export.

Deadman, obj export is obviousy another feature they ripped out of the unreal editor.
Tell me which levels you want as obj and I can email them to you, they're only about 500kb when rar compressed.

If an individual is found to have been passing around clones of old levels, I would not be so eager to say they could do nothing about it. I don't think companies would think twice about squashing such an effort...individual or group.

The idea of Eidos going after some guy for building a remake of this favourite level from a seven year old Eidos game, in a brand new Eidos level editor, would be beyond a joke.
They must have known this would happen before they released it.

All I'm saying is....never underestimate reactions. Of course it's silly but that certainly doesn't mean anything. Muscle flexing is just a fact of life in instances like this.

Only, at least in this specific case, I
own the original games (well, Thief Gold and Thief 2, but I'm planning to buy the Platinum pack one of these days), so I doubt that would give Eidos much reason to 'squash' such a transaction. Again, at least from what others have argued, it's a matter of folks who
don't own a certain game being able to play levels from that game on another engine, therefore having a potential to piss off whoever would get the profits (however little) from the game whose levels have been taken from. I once more suggest the disclaimer method. It's worked well enough for rom hosting, so why wouldn't it keep the heat off the host's back in this case, if they make it explicitly clear that one can't download a mission conversion without owning the game it came from?
deadman.

If it worked that way, projects like the Citadel Conversion Project or Classic Doom for Doom 3 would have been squashed long, long ago. Companies are generally fine with porting content from one game to another as long as they own the rights to both games.
