I have a widescreen monitor and I want the correct aspect ratio for fullscreen 4:3 games by having black bars on the sides.
You'd think this would be easy, but I can't find it. The GPU scaling option in the CCC is grayed out. I have an ATI 4850 and a 16:10 monitor connected via DVI.

I don't mean Dark Engine games, though.

ah, ok.
# what make/model of monitor do you have
# what version of windows are you running
# what gfx card and driver version are you using..

LG 226W
Windows 7 x86-64
ATI 4850, driver version 8.650.0.0 (? pretty sure I installed Catalyst 9.9)

Hmm looks like you your monitor dosent have that option, but as I am running the same OS and make of gfx card I should be able to find the solution for you..
mm, thus far i have discovered that if you have the monitor connected via digital(DVI) the ATi CCC disables the GPu scalling, I am trying to find a away around this..

I don't know it this will help, but I use ATI exclusively and have always used the drivers from
(
http://www.omegadrivers.net/)
They invariably are better than those from ATI directly.
I'll not be getting a new card for some time so I cannot speak to the PCIe cards and drivers. My AGP card(s) still do the job adequately for my uses.

Couple of things to check...
1, Is the driver running the display at 60 Hz? I've read a few instances of scaling being grayed out because the driver is trying to run the display at 59. If so, force it to 60 and see if that helps.
2, looking through a PDF of an owners manual for an L226WT, there's something in the OSD setup menu called "4:3 in wide". If you have this feature, set it 4:3.

their download links dotn appear to be working and they dont have any vista/w7 x64 drivers listed.
