I usually have 16 stairs per 360 degree rotation, meaning steps are positioned in 22.5 degree increments. I do this using the console to input precise numbers (this may take some time); steps are 1 units thick and rise 0.75 each....
Don't forget to rotate the textures on top of the steps.
That's how I do it too, but I have the steps 1 unit high because they're usually deep enough for the AI to cope. I also make the air and solid cylinders fairly wide so the AI don't try to climb up the inside where it's too steep.
I've found that high steps make it easier to ensure there's enough headroom once the stairs complete a full rotation.
In All Torc I got a bit carried away and had 1 spiral staircase in the first mission and 3 in the last mission.

Well for the life of me I couldn't get a screenshot of the editor window so this is going to have to suffice for now.
Inline Image:
http://i412.photobucket.com/albums/pp203/sliptip_2008/Pic02.jpgIt just shows the basic layout for a 12x12 stairwell - what it doesn't show is that you have to carve out the back of the steps with air brushes.
After you've got the four steps done just multibrush and repeat :thumb:
Hope this helps!

Impressive, although it eats brushes even faster than the traditional method. :D

Doesn't SCREEN_DUMP command work for you?

Printscreen is disabled in the editor by default.

That's true it does eat more brushes - but personally I wouldn't worry about it. It's not like the stairwell's getting repeated every 6 feet.
@Zontik & NV - Thanks for that info gentlemen. That was kinda driving me nuts.

Gee. I just have the focus on some other window with Dromed in the foreground visible and use Printscreen (not alt-Printscreen). That gets your entire screen, including Dromed.
Are you suggesting, what, creating an lg.ini file to have the following?
[WinShell]
DisableWindowsPrintScreen=0
Does lg.ini affect Thief as well as Dromed?
What about setting MT=1? Are there any known dangers to muti-threading Dromed/Thief?

Absolutely none of that stuff has been tested yet. I'm working on a different section of code right now, but I suppose I should finish that up.

Building a spiral staircase should be relatively straightforward. The only "complication" is the fact that in order to accomplish it you're going to be basically required to either subject yourself to a fair amount of trial-and-error, or have a good handle on mathematics (specifically trigonometry).
Personally, both for ease-of-accomplishment, and the final looks, I'm an advocate of an airbrushed space, with a center fillbrush "pillar", and then stairs made of rectangular fillbrushes.
Carving it out step-by-step with airbrushes (I saw this suggested) just seems excessively time-consuming.

now with the info you gave me this is going to be somehow challenging to create the spiral staircase:)...let´s see what i can do...
