Oh for Newton's sake, I'm not trying to make up an equality between science and religion here. Logic and reason have always worked better for me than the big bearded guy in the sky. And whenever I did check something, science was either right about it (eg I climbed a plane and saw he wasn't sitting in the clouds) or at least much closer to the truth.
That has made me trust science and believe in it, in far more cases than I could ever check. And I've fared well with this so far. Nevertheless, as a single person I'm essentially a believer in science. And so are most of you, in most scientific fields, in which you don't happen to hold a doctorate. You say you could rigorously investigate gravity, but face it, you won't and actually you can't, because you have a job and generally more important things to do, than checking what's apparently correct anyway. A single person cannot prove all by it's lonely that science is right in everything it says, but has to trust and believe in other humans.
I'm merely admitting that I don't know all that much, but it doesn't mean I'm caving in to religion. It means I reserve a bit of doubt though. And at one point I'll check out myself what's up with that fabled afterlife. I bet I'll be thoroughly disappointed.

I understand, in theory, the psychological pattern that seems to lie behind the acts of scientists who openly oppose religion and try to "disprove" god's existence. I'm not saying it's smart or right, nor that I agree with it.
There are no scientists doing this. At all. Ever.

I was talking of what's happened throughout history, not today.
I was talking about what you were talking about!

Whatever.

I mean, I take gravity for granted, but if I wanted to rigorously investigate it, I still
could. The afterlife? Less so.
We keep sending people to the afterlife, but they never come back and report! :nono:
