I watched JC as he pulled the nano sword out. He fiddles with it for a second before it pops up, so I think it is just a handle.
I remember the first time I saw the light saber in star wars (and I do think they originated the idea of the effect) It was impressive, but it didn't make sense and then you could see the power of the thing. It could slice right through metal. It made that dangerous electrical sound as it was whipped through the air, but my favorite thing of all was the way you could sort of pole vault with it if you were athletic. In fact it seemed like some kind of martial arts move the way Luke pulled it off in one of his battles on a fire escape.
JC's flashlight augmentation looks a lot like the flashlight in Half Life. While I was there in front of the mirror checking out the sword, I decided to check out the source of light. I figured it would be coming from his eyes, but it wasn't. I didn't come from anywhere. It just sort of was.

Well, as I get it, it's not a flashlight, but vision enhancement, similar to... uhm, lack the word. Like the goggles from the army, not the green ones (heat), but there is also one that increases the light, making everything a bit brighter. (In german, it's called something like "remaining light enhancer") I figured it would be something like that...

Dragonclaw, that's what I was thinking too, but the thing is, JC's light seems to be focused in a small circular area. If it was really vision enhancement, then one would expect everything on the screen to be brighter, not just a circular "flashlight area."

there are vision enhancement goggles; i think the "light augmentation" is just supposed to be a portable flashlight, nothing more ... kinda like astroboy maybe? ;)

Hm, no Deyen, not everything needs to be brighter necessarily. Like, in the middle of your focus, you see sharper than around, and around you can difference between light and darkness better (if I remmeber right from biology). so it could also be explained (in some way, whatever that may be ;) ) that his vision would only be lightened in the center of his view...
However, if you say it looks more like a flashlight, can't say anything against it. I'll have to look at JC in a mirror sometime...

Well, as humans are now. The point your eyes are focusing on are less sensitive to light than your peripheral vision. (I think you got it right, but just clarifying.) So when you look at something dim, it might disappear, but if you look a bit to the side, you'll see it. If the "light augmentation" is increasing the light entering your eyes (like dilating pupils) then everything would be a bit brighter, and your peripheral vision would be more sensitive to light, so I imagine it'd be kinda opposite to what the light aug is now. Anyway though, I can't think of any way to emulate peripheral vision on a flat screen, so it's kinda pointless to talk about it. :p

Almost every object in Deus Ex is explained. From the Dragon Tooth the Greasels.
Except for crates but who cares. They are made of a study material (metal/wood) and they carry items inside.

Well, no, that's what I mean. If there is, and you agreed there is, different light and sharp viewing in different parts of your eye, then I can see no reason why certain parts couldn't be increased separately.
In addition, you would like to light out the area you're looking at (and aiming at), and not some area somewhere where you can't see anything sharp ;)

Yea, I think I see what you're saying. Anyway though, as it currently is, the DX light aug just looks like a flashlight. :cheeky:
