I think that the reading isn't exactly "necessary" per se. You don't even really need to consult the actual datacubes, but then, completing the game would require you have all those ways to open a door and such.

There is one area, however, where reading a book can be very useful. Remember Maggie Chow's apartment? She has a datacube that mentions that she changed her password from "Title of some book." Being the detective you are, you find that particular book, then read another, which has a title that happens to be a new password.

Sorry, but it's been so long since I played up to that part of the game that I can't remember the title of the books. It's been 24 hours... way too long, no?:sly:
