I hear ya, been there before several times over the last 15 or so years. The executive level is the most immersive for me as well, I don't know what it is...
The level has so much to it. There's a bit of a shopping area with cash machines as you described, the four groves which allow for a bit of Earth when on the far side of the Solar System, the theater that is so cool it has stars all around you as if it is placed just outside the station, the northeast banquet hall where Edward alerted SHODAN as to where survivors were hiding, the dining room connected to the Banquet hall, the crew quarters, the ridiculously long ventilation shaft leading to a set of computer nodes, the music--oh man the music probably my favorite in Shock 1, lots of good e-mail logs in this level as well and finally it ends with an encounter with the Cyborg of Edward Diego.
I remember after I set the reactor to self destruct and made my way back up to the Flight Deck to get to the escape pods I was so immersed in the game I treat memories of it as if I had really been there. The graphics are not that good today but that doesn't matter it's everything else like the alarm sound, the random shaking of the station, the cyborg assassins waiting around each corner... ahahaha almost makes me want to play it again but I shouldn't overdo it I just replayed System Shock 1 like half a year ago.
