It may have been before you were on the Internet, but it was certainly not before the internet.
There was plenty of UseNet traffic about it: (

I played it in 1994 when it first came out. The original floppy disk version. Years later that I finally got the chance of playing the enhanced CD version.
Same here. I remember a friend at school got the CD version and proceeded to record a tape that had all the voice logs in chronological order. It was pretty cool to hear the chronology of the Citadel Station disaster.
If there was one game that I'd love to see remade faithfully, it's
System Shock. IMO the game holds up extremely well, but it would benefit from updated, fully 3D graphics, and most of all from controls that are closer to what we're used to nowadays - WASD, mouse look.

I've done that with a CD. Getting logs and emails into an order that made sense took longer than I thought.

I played it back then with a friend on his brothers computer. At that time we were real freaks, playing games and watching movies all the time. When we saw System Shock it just blew us away. I can remember watching the intro sequence without sound (dos+soundcard problems, this was pretty normal back then ^^) but it was pretty impressive. The game itself was so complex, dark and you could do so much things we never saw in a video game... It was just a magic day, because my friend came to me and said "he theres a new videogame, I'll show you", and this was so impressive I'm hanging around in a Shock forum 15 years later ^^

While I had an Amiga and no PC in 1994 and so I couldn't play System Shock immediately, I found reviews in the local gaming magazines extremely compelling and, if memory serves me right, ended up getting SS (floppy version) in late 1995. Needless to say, I got hooked almost immediately... Exploring all the levels was very much fun, reading all the logs added a lot of depth to the story - and the Maintenance Level... oh man, that freaking Maintenance Level... I liked combat too, it was much more fun than Doom in that ammo didn't grow on trees; for the first few levels during my first play-through I dreaded running into Hoppers because the only weapon that felt really effective against them was the MagPulse and there was next to no ammunition available for it. Later on I would just get to Maintenance as soon as I could, buff up and run to where the Laser Rapier was :)
Ah, good times.

Having already played UUW 1 and 2, I couldn't wait to get my hands on SS (although I had to to some degree, as it was impractical for me to get to a shop that had it, and so had to order it by mail from the UK). Can't say I remember if there was some extra delay or not, but I got the CD version - and with an upgraded PC and sound card early '95, things were just incredibly awesome.
Special memory highlights for me are were you demolish a series of core computers while SHODAN warns you of the implications over the loudspeakers - culminating in a metallic "NOOOOOOOOOOO!" and then an onrush of robots/mechs, and the elevator music :)
I did probably play the demo, at least that rings a bell ...
I was an Origin fan in general back then, and so I also got Bioforge which was released a little later, but first announced at about the same time - a very different game, but with a similar theme.

Just curious to see who the really old-school folks here are. And what did you think of it when you first played it? Difficult to get into? Amazing?
Played the original floppy version when it came out, then the enhanced version on CD, and then of course SS2. Both are still unmtached (IMO) for this style of game, although to be perectly honest in some ways I still prefer the original.
Many a night on the original I was up till midnight or 1 when I should have been thinking about getting up in the morning for work. :cheeky:

I remember playing the demo off the my copy of Electronic Entertainment magazine in December 1994. I was simply floored as to how immersive it was. Not many first person shooters existed at that time and DooM was definitely stealing the thunder from this game unfortunately which kept it a quiet classic.
Now I feel old, lol!
System Shock remains my favorite game of all time.

I got the CD version in 95 or 96. I was somewhere around 10 yrs old. Had played the demo beforehand.

I had CD of that magazine-ish thing. It was fun. It had a feature on SShock where they gave you tips with the hacking puzzles, among other things. I don't remember the demo being on the issue I had though. I still have it somewhere I think...
Same disc had a review of MegaRace, IIRC. Ah, Lance Boyle. Another classic.

Same here.
Strangely enough, I've had a recurring dream about SShock for years. Always, I'm on the executive level, and I walk down the hallway where the vending machines (cash machines I think) are on the way to the central hub of the level. In the dream, I've never thought I was in a game. My subconsious apparently thinks that place is real and I have been there. :weird:
Now THAT is what I call immersion. ;)
