I try and use a different weapon set each play-through, but usually I don't go in for Heavy Weapons much. They're all good in their own way, but they're heavy, cumbersome and I don't like spending points in Heavy Weapons. If I was going to use one, however, I'd use the GEP. Mainly for anti-armor, although I would use it as a "lockpick" if there was no viable alternative. The Flamethrower can be fun (in a manner of speaking) and is useful in the early, human-dominated levels, but it isn't worth much later in the game when robots, elite troops and augmented agents are the norm. The Plasma Rifle looks oh-so-cool, but doesn't actually do anything that a GEP or flamethrower doesn't do better, IMO. It's main use is in Multiplayer, where skillful use can blind and disorientate players, regardless of what augmentations they use.

I don't feel safe without a GEP gun. I play stealthily so that's the only heavy weapon I bring with me. Besides, I hate heavy weaponry.

I only ever carry heavy ordinance when I'm playing for shits and giggles and have messed around with the game files so that every item and weapon only takes up a single inventory space. That way I get to carry everything.
Otherwise, the spy drone, Dragon's Tooth, lockpicks and hacking work better for my play style.

The flamerthrower will disable all normal soldiers and MIB/WIB, since they run around screaming away. I have yet to try on Commandos and the augs [but they probably are immune/resistant to it
(Simons definitely is immune as his file shows)
.
But the flamethrower works great on the large/small karken and greasels. It is so funny (abet rather cruel to an animal lover) to flame a greasel and watch it run all over the place like a rolling small fireball! I have yet to test it out on the greys thoug
!

Flamethrower is a great gun early if you want to roast some NSF, but it is usually the GEP gun. Two words: White Phosphorous.

I would love to lug that thing around but it's so damn big! I don't want to use the inventory exploit either. And there's only one type of ammo. I found it to be too weak when I arrived in Paris.
Or maybe it's because my heavy guns skill sucks.

get your heavy skills up to advanced [you can do it when you start the game] or master, and your very nasty- you have no movement restrictions, so you can literally run around with the heavy weapons.

I once completed the entire game using only a regular pistol, the stealth pistol, the mini-crossbow, a prod, and a baton - as well as the usual tools, frag and EMP grenades and lockpicks. Worked fine. Going up against the commandos was a blast! Needless to say, I hacked my through the game.

Nethawk!
Ah my partner of the stealthy approach. Thanks for that piece of info. I was having doubts about wether or not my style of play could beat the game.

Instead, he came and shot me. (I am playing for giggles at the moment and have a HUGE stack of weapons with me, so I entered Versalife #2 by the front entrance and wiped out all of the resistance.)
Has anyone a good idea for the guard room in VL #2, btw? I used my LAW for something else, so I had a serious problem with the 3 of them inside of it. :(
Heck, even with a LAW, that would've been a problem. I think I wasted all my LAMs in the end for that room (I only had 2 anyway) and used the dragon's tooth for the survivor... what a waste.
(guard room = the guard room next to the toilets & the kitchen, if you head right from the hand with the floating earth)
... back to your quote.
If {"the augs" = Anna, Paul, Gunther, Walton}
Well, Anna is QUITE vulnerable to the flamethrower. You need to set her on fire a couple of times though in the airplane, but she will run around and scream just like the average normal guard.
I haven't tested the flamethrower against Paul. Might be interesting though.
Gunther & Simons I haven't met yet.
